Gyokeres wants Premier League move for ‘revenge’ and says he is as good as Kane and Haaland

Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres says he wants to play in the Premier League for “revenge” and ranks himself among the world’s best strikers.

The Gunners are understood to be edging closer to agreeing a deal to sign the in-demand striker, with current Sporting CP said to be demanding £69million plus add-ons as talks over a move continue.

Gyokeres, who was previously at Brighton before impressing in the Championship with Coventry prior to his move to Portugal, has reportedly not returned to Sporting training as he looks to push through a return to England.

And in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe, the Sweden international has reinforced his desire to make his mark in the Premier League.

“It’s one of the biggest leagues in Europe,” Gyokeres, who moved to Sporting having shone in the Championship, said.

“I spent several years there without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it’s something I would like to do. It would be a great revenge.”

The 27-year-old has also attracted interest from Manchester United but has stressed the need for whichever club he joins to be desperate to sign him.

“It’s football, you never know. I’m not thinking about it, we’ll see what happens.” he said.

“If something is going to happen, it will happen. The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me.”

Gyokeres: ‘I’m level with Kane and Haaland’

Gyokeres has an outstanding record since joining from Coventry in 2023, scoring 97 goals in 102 games, and now feels he is among the world’s best strikers, including Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski.

“I’m definitely one of them,” he said. “It’s difficult to rank me but yes, I’m at the same table as them now.

“What I managed to do at Sporting, I’m convinced I can do anywhere. You haven’t seen the best of Gyokeres yet.”
