Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming collaboration with Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal is not only his most exciting movie project to date but also has the potential to make up for three of his previous box office failures.
Considering the number of TV and movie projects he is associated with, Guy Ritchie is undoubtedly one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood right now. Many of his projects, including the recent Young Sherlock on Prime Video, have also been performing incredibly well, which paves the way for him to get even more work. However, among all his upcoming projects, his most exciting one is his team-up with Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill.
Ritchie is known for having some of the best ensembles in his movies and shows, but this one promises to be far better than most others. At the same time, the film also seems to be the perfect stepping stone for him to redeem three of his previous box office disappointments.
In The Grey Can Make Up For Guy Ritchie’s Previous Collaborations With Henry Cavill & Jake Gyllenhaal
In The Grey is the first movie in which Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Guy Ritchie are working together. However, in the past, Ritchie has individually collaborated with both actors. Henry Cavill served as one of the leads in Guy Ritchie’s 2015 action comedy The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and also starred in his recent war action drama The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Similarly, Jake Gyllenhaal was the leading man in Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, which premiered in 2023. From a critical standpoint, all three films performed fairly well. While The Man From U.N.C.L.E boasts a decent Rotten Tomatoes score of 68%, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and The Covenant stand at 68% and 82%, respectively.
Despite earning favorable reviews from viewers and critics, however, all three movies struggled at the box office. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant made a little over $21 million against a budget of $55 million. Meanwhile, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare raked in slightly over $29 million against a $60 million budget.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E., too, could not break even after earning $110 million against an estimated budget of $75–84 million. While all three films were packed with all the ingredients that make Ritchie’s movies incredibly entertaining and memorable and also featured brilliant performances from both Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill, they struggled to leave their marks at the global box office.
In The Grey, however, could be a major game changer and redeem all three movies. As an action adventure caper, the film already seems to have a wider appeal than the three movies. With Cavill and Gyllenhaal, Ritchie also seems to have moved more into a “repertory” phase where he truly understands the two actors’ strengths and how he must portray them on the screen.
Ritchie’s Previous Movies With Cavill & Gyllenhaal Deserve More Appreciation
While In The Grey is an exciting addition to Guy Ritchie, Henry Cavill, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s portfolio, it must be noted that The Covenant, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. are all incredibly entertaining in themselves. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. feels like the perfect stand-in for some of the greatest spy thriller franchises, like James Bond.
If it had performed well at the box office, it could have marked the beginning of a full-fledged franchise with Henry Cavill as the leading man.
Similarly, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare never leaves any dull moments with its star-studded cast, high-octane action sequences, and mindless fun. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, too, delivers a heartfelt story about wartime camaraderie and puts Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting forte on full display.
Since In The Grey is set to premiere on May 15, 2026, audiences still have time to check out Guy Ritchie‘s previous movies with Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill. This would give them the perfect primer on Ritchie’s signature directorial style and his evolving collaboration with the two stars.
