The release of Grand Theft Auto VI is almost certainly going to be the biggest in video game history, as millions of players stand by to see what Rockstar has been cooking up over the years. Unless something truly bizarre happens, unprecedented numbers will be logging in to play on launch day, and that’s a reality the developer is going to have to contend with.
Though we haven’t had confirmation just yet, it’s highly likely that GTA VI‘s single-player mode will also require some form of internet connection to play in the first instance.
That potential future has fans worried that there could be issues on launch day, and recent predictive revelations are spelling out a future that really could spoil the first few weeks in the wild for the game.
Could GTA 6 Really Freeze The World?
Over on Reddit, one user shared news from an “industry insider,” that claims Rockstar may have to contend with the biggest server load in video game history, which in turn may “freeze the world” for a day or more.
So how possible is that? Well, a lot of it depends on how the launch and game itself are set-up by the developer. In all likelihood, Rockstar Games will launch the game’s multiplayer modes some weeks after the single-player, just as they did with the release of the last game.
That will certainly alleviate the issue at first, though there will still obviously be millions of players flooding into the game to play the single-player regardless.
How successful they will be in doing that depends on whether an internet connection is required at all times when playing solo, or if a connection is needed to start the game up, but unnecessary after that. If the latter is true, then the idea of an immense world freeze lasting days is considerably less likely.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Broke Multiple Digital Storefronts
Those of you who were paying close attention at the time will remember that the launch of highly anticipated platformer Hollow Knight: Silksong broke several digital storefronts thanks to simultaneous player demands.
The obvious caveat to that is that Rockstar and their partners will be very aware of just how popular their game is going to be, and they have the money and scale to ensure that the effects of that are felt minimally.
Of course, one of the major problems with implementing tech on that scale is that it’s really impossible to know how it’s going to go until the thing they are preparing for actually happens. Let’s hope they give themselves enough room for maneuver, and we end up with a relatively smooth first few days for GTA VI.
