Debates about the expected price of Grand Theft Auto 6 have been ongoing for years, but the real cost of the game probably won’t lie in its price tag. With the skyrocketing costs of hardware as of late, those looking to invest in a good setup for playing the game could be taking quite a hit to the wallet.
A post from GTA 6 Countdown on X highlights the recent price increase for the PS5 Pro, which now costs over $1,000 when a couple of basic accessories are included. The console and controller alone just jumped from $750 (already a step up from its original $700 MSRP) to $900, the disc drive costs $79, and the stand to use the console vertically costs $29. Add in tax, and the cost of investing in the ideal GTA 6 setup becomes truly intimidating.
The PS5 Pro Isn’t Getting Cheaper
Plenty of fans aren’t planning to purchase a PS5 Pro just to play GTA 6, but it’s not hard to see why the console costs are concerning to GTA players. GTA 6 won’t be releasing on PC this year, and the trailers so far suggest that the graphics could be extremely demanding for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PS5 Pro experience will almost certainly be the best way to play, and for a generational game release, a lot of people want that experience.
Those who are still intent on buying a PS5 Pro aren’t exactly happy about it. X user Sylvaneus claims that they’ll be buying the console, but notes that they’ll “beat [themselves] up” over it. Meanwhile, early PS5 adopters are breathing a sigh of relief that they made the jump when they did, and X user Lamp captions a video of basketball greats celebrating their victories with “Mfs who copped a PS5 Pro on day one.”
We Could See Another Price Increase
It’s a tough time to be looking for new hardware, as there’s no sign of the price increases easing off any time soon. With AI data centers snatching up components left and right, the cost of consoles and PCs is on an upward trend, and issues like war and tariffs certainly aren’t helping matters.
I wouldn’t necessarily advise rushing out to buy a PS5 Pro — that’s still a lot more than I’d pay for a console — but waiting for a better deal isn’t likely to pay off in the near future. If you absolutely need to play Grand Theft Auto 6 with all the bells and whistles, you might just need to start saving as soon as you can.
