Genshin Impact Officially Becoming Unplayable For Millions From April 8

Since 2020, Genshin Impact has taken the world by storm whilst putting the gacha RPG genre back on the map in the meantime. Developed by HoYoverse, the anime-style open-world title is free to play, but players will know all too well about in-game monetization in the form of gacha gambling, which can see you rewarded with unique characters, weapons, and more. As such, Genshin Impact has become a cornerstone of the gaming sphere in recent years, but an announcement could spell bad news for millions of fans.

It’s The End Of An Era For Genshin Impact

Last year saw HoYoverse announce that it would no longer be supporting Genshin Impact on the PlayStation 4 as of 2026, and unfortunately, that time is almost here. Due to hardware limitations and application size, it would no longer be able to support the PS4’s demands, but the RPG will still be available on the PlayStation 5, as well as the Xbox Series X/S, mobile and PC. You may have noticed that back in 2025, the PlayStation 4 version of Genshin Impact was delisted from the PlayStation Store, with in-game purchases following suit in February this year. Now, the final step is underway.

“Thank you for your continued support and love for Genshin Impact on PS4!” the announcement from August 2025 read. “Due to limitations related to hardware performance and platform application size, we will be discontinuing support and updates for Genshin Impact on PS4 in future versions.”

Genshin Impact will no longer be compatible on the PlayStation 4 as of 8 April 2026, meaning that you have just over a week to enjoy the hit game on the Sony console. After this, the Hoyoverse title will no longer be available to log in and play, and no further updates for its PS4 version will be implemented.

Genshin Impact Will Remain Available On PS5

However, fear not, as all progression in Genshin Impact is tied to individual accounts, rather than hardware. As such, you will be able to log in on another platform and be able to pick up where you left off, whether that is on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, or mobile. This is also the case for fellow Hoyoverse titles such as Honkai Star Rail and, more recently, Zenless Zone Zero.

With Genshin Impact being one of the most successful gacha games of all time, it becoming unplayable on one console is unlikely to have a hard hit on the overall player base. However, it is still unfortunate news for those who have enjoyed the gacha game on the PlayStation 4 up until now. It is just another stark reminder that the 2013 console truly is last-gen.
