The first look at Supergirl has been released, and although brief, it already confirms that the DC Universe is making a change from the comics. After Superman’s successful box office run and positive reception from critics and audiences, James Gunn’s DCU has fans looking forward to Milly Alcock’s return as Supergirl. The story of the DCU’s House of El is just starting.
While Superman analyzed the hero through a different lens, with his Kryptonian parents sending Kal-El to Earth to rule it, but Clark Kent’s upbringing making him choose to be a hero, 2026’s Supergirl movie will also explore a different take on Kara Zoer-El. That will also seemingly include a sly change to a comics element that could fit the theme.
DC Has Released The First Look At 2026’s Supergirl
After much speculation, James Gunn and DC’s official accounts shared the first look at Milly Alcock’s Supergirl in the 2026 movie on social media. The brief teaser shows Supergirl sitting at what appears to be a sort of bus stop, only for a spaceship to descend in front of her, while wearing regular clothes, not her superhero suit.
The teaser is not the only footage we are getting of Supergirl in December. Along with it, Gunn confirmed the rumors that the first Supergirl trailer would arrive this month. According to the DC Studios co-CEO, the Supergirl trailer will be released this week, though a specific day was not given. The Supergirl trailer can then play in theaters ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
The Supergirl Teaser Confirms A DC Comics Change
While brief, the Supergirl movie footage allows us to realize a change from the comics is in play. The DC Universe film is an adaptation of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series written by Tom King, who is one of the writers in charge of shaping the DCU alongside Gunn. In that story, Supergirl’s suit plays a big role.
The hero can always be seen either with her suit fully on display or with it sticking out from under her clothes. However, the Supergirl teaser showed Milly Alcock’s Kara with regular clothes and no superhero suit beneath them.
It is easy to tell, as a new look at the Supergirl movie suit at Brazil’s CCXP made it clear that she has a high collar, which would have stuck out.
I believe the change might be in line with the DCU trying to establish the tone of the film, as Supergirl is less of a straightforward hero like David Corenswet’s Superman, still trying to find her way out of a dark role. In that sense, the Supergirl move is fitting.
