Every Dinosaur Bone Location (& Rewards)

One of the most exciting and unique collectibles in Red Dead Redemption 2 would have to be dinosaur bones, which perfectly encapsulate the growing scientific and public interest in dinosaurs during the game’s era. Deborah MacGuiness is an old paleontologist searching for dinosaur bones in the region. Arthur can offer his services in finding these bones and giving their locations to a good paleontologist.

Dinosaur bones can be found in cliff walls, rock formations, or just sticking out of the ground. While you can find these bones before meeting MacGuiness, you can’t do anything with them until that first meeting. Therefore, you’ll want to meet MacGuiness and know what you’re doing before you go hunting for dinosaurs.

How To Start The “A Test of Faith” Quest

Where To Find Deborah MacGuiness

Arthur helps Deborah MacGuinness survey some dinosaur fossils in a screenshot from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Deborah MacGuiness is an elderly woman crouched in a crater in the Heartlands, carefully unearthing a new discovery. Ride south from the H in Heartlands and you’ll eventually come across her.

Her quest, “A Test of Faith,” tasks Arthur with finding 30 dinosaur bones scattered throughout the map. For every amount of bones you find, you may reach certain milestones, unlocking rewards when you speak to Deborah again, from important crafting items to valuable artifacts that sell for a lot of cash.

The Heartlands act as the home of the Van der Linde gang after leaving Colter. The region features the town of Valentine, one of the best towns in Red Dead Redemption 2, and features Deborah MacGuiness, making it the first region you’ll explore for dinosaur bones.

There are six dinosaur bones in the Heartlands, with two found not too far from MacGuiness. While exploring the Heartlands, make sure to stop by Cumberland Forest, the smallest region in the game with just two dinosaur bones to its name.

Roanoke Ridge and Lemoyne are less populated with dinosaur bones, likely due to the many major towns that populate the two regions. Lemoyne’s two dinosaur bones are both located in the northwest corner of the region, not too far from one of the coolest Easter eggs in RDR2.

Meanwhile, three dinosaur bones in Roanoke Ridge are located north of Elysian Pool. Due to the huge distance between them, you’ll likely want to collect the bones in both regions at different times.

Ambarino and West Elizabeth are huge regions, with Ambarino having the second-largest number of dinosaur bones hidden within. Most of Ambarino’s five dinosaur bones can be found in the Grizzles East, with one only found in the Grizzlies West, not too far from Cumberland Forest.

If you want to complete as much of RDR2 as possible while playing Arthur Morgan, Ambarino and West Elizabeth are the last regions you’ll be able to explore before the epilogue and the change in protagonists.

At the same time, the three dinosaur bones in West Elizabeth are all north of Strawberry, making them fairly easy to collect when you first visit this region in RDR2.

You won’t be able to get to New Austin in RDR2 as Arthur due to an invisible sniper, who will shoot Arthur Morgan before he even has a chance to get close to the land of outlaws and bandits. This area is only available during the game’s epilogue, so the last Dinosaur Bones cannot be accessed until you finish the main story.

When you can get to this far western area of RDR2, you can find out that New Austin hosts eight remaining Dinosaur Bones to finish the impressive collectible quest created by Deborah MacGuiness. There are two bones in each sub-region of New Austin: Gaptooth Ridge, Rio Bravo, Hennigan Stead, and Cholla Springs.

Diving deep into this once-forbidden region will soon let you collect every single artifact from the distant past, earning you every possible reward from the quest tied to various milestones. Here are all the rewards you can get from getting all 30 bones, including what they do:

  • 1 Dinosaur Bone = Quartz Chunk — Helps you craft the Bear Claw Talisman, an item that decreases the drainage of your Health Core by 10% while you wear it.
  • 15 Dinosaur Bones = Skull Statue — Valuable artifact that sells for a lot of cash.
  • 30 Dinosaur Bones = Jaw Bone Knife — Decorative hunting knife that makes for a good weapon or sells for a good amount of money.

Each reward tier of this quest is tied to gaining great items or good profits, making it worth the effort to become a paleontologist for a while. For anyone who finds all 30 Dinosaur Bones in Red Dead Redemption 2, they can mark off one of the game’s trickiest collectible missions, which helps unlock a new interaction with the game’s most mysterious NPC — The Stranger.
