As always, Thing has proven to be a valuable asset in Wednesday season 2, but he’s so much more than that, too – and Enid is one of the few to consistently recognize it. The Addams family and their Outcast friends are back to their unusual tricks in Wednesday season 2, as Wednesday and her brother Pugsley return to Nevermore for another year of academic turmoil.
As Wednesday works to unmask her stalker, Enid’s potential killer, and the seedy underbelly of Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, Thing lends a loyal helping hand, asking for nothing in return. And yet, in season 2, nearly the entire Addams family manages to forget Thing’s birthday. While they eventually apologize and make it up to him, the disembodied hand feels understandably let down by the family he so dutifully serves.
So much so that it leads to one of the season’s funniest and most questionable scenes, in which the ever-observant Enid finds Thing in a compromising position. This scene not only showcases what makes Wednesday such an oddly endearing and likable series, but it also highlights why Thing remains one of the show’s best characters.
Enid Questions How Thing Got Drunk In Wednesday Season 2
In Wednesday season 2, episode 2, “The Devil You Woe,” Enid discovers Thing in his little hideaway, surrounded by tiny, hotel mini-bar alcohol bottles. Victor Dorobantu’s performance perfectly sells Thing’s drunken state, as his movements are sluggish and clumsy, less energetic than we’re used to seeing from our favorite lone hand.
Enid asks an important question at the beginning of their interaction. She, much like the audience watching, wonders how a hand can get drunk, let alone drink anything. As she helpfully points out, though, “It doesn’t matter.” Part of Thing’s charm is that we don’t always understand how he does what he does, and yet we believe he’s capable of anything anyway.
Why Thing Continues To Be One Of Wednesday’s Best Characters
Thing has more personality in his thumb than some of Wednesday‘s more “normal” characters have in their entire bodies. He’s loyal, witty, and quick on his fingers. Most importantly, he has a genuine emotional arc in Wednesday season 2, part 1. It’s not just that the Addams family members, save Fester, forgot about his birthday. It’s that they continue to treat him as nothing more than a servant.
Thing doesn’t cower away from them, however. He calls Morticia out for using him, followed by a heartbreaking montage of the Addams family matriarch and patriarch acting without regard for Thing’s feelings. His friendship with Enid is a highlight of the new season. She even saves his life when he’s almost kidnapped.
Wednesday may be a capable and fearless investigator, but she’d be nowhere without Thing, and thankfully, the show isn’t afraid to acknowledge it. Somehow, Thing being able to drink isn’t all that surprising. There’s nothing this appendage can’t do, and I can’t wait to see more of him in action in Wednesday season 2, part 2.
Wednesday season 2, part 2 premieres on Netflix September 3.
