My puppy Calliope, came from 2 rescued mixed stray dogs that we knew nothing about. I decided to do the Embark DNA + Health Test so I could learn more about her breed mixes and traits, as well as any potential health risks. There were some big surprises in her DNA results! (We thought for sure she was part Great Pyrenees and had some Shetland Sheepdog, German Shepherd, and Border Collie, based on the appearance of her parents; however, there is no Great Pyrenees or Border Collie! It turns out she is mainly Husky, Lab, Pitt, Chow, Shetland Sheepdog, and German Shepherd, plus over 30% Supermutt, meaning she has small percentages of many other breeds too.)
Knowing her main breeds & their traits has been SO helpful in understanding her personality and with training. It was also comforting to find out that she had no major health concerns. It only took a couple of weeks to get her results back, and Embark emails you every step of the way and shares some helpful insights when you receive your results. I would definitely recommend Embark! – Hip Sidekick, Misty
We’ve done this for all of our rescued German Shepherds. This is a very cost-effective way to test for breed-specific genetic issues that your vet will want to know about — all GSDs should undergo these tests even if they’re not going to breed (e.g., you need to know about MDR1 before any surgery, as 10% of the breed carries the gene and it can cause dangerous reactions to certain anesthesia drugs). It’s cheaper to do them this way as a bundle than to send off individual tests. The breed and “find your dog’s relatives” part is cute, but the health information is really important. – Hip Reader, Maggie
We got the results way faster than I expected. The results mostly seemed pretty spot on, though we were surprised by a couple of them. I also love how you can see your dog’s relatives who have also done Embark. I love the health kit portion the most, now I know what to keep an eye on for my little dog. I definitely recommend Embark!
We rescued our pup from a local shelter. They told us he was Rottweiler, Husky, and Australian Shepherd. Embark DNA test said he was 30% lab, 20% Border Collie, and 20% Australian Cattle Dog. Embark gave us so much clarity so we are better equipped to deal with training and stop or slow any possible health issues in the future! 10/10 would recommend Embark!
