Creator Kurt Sutter Hints At Possible Return

Kurt Sutter isn’t ruling out a return to the Sons of Anarchy universe just yet. Despite the long-scrapped prequel series and his highly publicized exit from FX seven years ago, Sutter has revealed the idea is still alive, at least in theory.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Sutter, who created SOA alongside John Linson, shared that his relationship with FX Networks chairman John Landgraf has not only healed but grown stronger over time.

John Landgraf and I were always friends while I worked with him, but we’ve become really close friends since I left, and that’s been powerful for me. I know that he loves the IP, and I trust John. When I know it’s the right time for it, and it all makes sense, that’s when it’ll happen. When we have lunch, we’ll talk about the business and work, but it’s never about the pursuit of a single project.

The planned prequel would have explored the origins of the Sons of Anarchy, centering on John Teller’s return from Vietnam and the early formation of SAMCRO. It was set to feature younger versions of key figures like Gemma [Katey Sagal] and Clay Morrow, charting the club’s evolution from idealistic beginnings into the violent criminal enterprise seen in the original series. The story also aimed to dive deeper into the mystery surrounding John’s death and the journals he left behind, which later shaped Jax’s [Charlie Hunnam] journey. And while the two don’t actively discuss reviving a specific project, Sutter made it clear the door isn’t fully closed on expanding the franchise.

But look, I think there are still some stories to tell, and it would be fantastic to come back and be able to do that. I don’t think it’s completely off the table, but as things change, you embrace whatever direction you’re taken in.

The comments come seven years after Sutter’s relationship with Disney soured in 2019, following the studio’s acquisition of FX, culminating in his firing from Mayans M.C. during its second season. At the time, reports indicated that Disney executives took issue with Sutter’s management style and the tone of his scripts, which were deemed too dark and provocative for the company’s evolving brand.

Sutter later acknowledged being dismissed after complaints about his behavior and creative choices, marking a dramatic end to his long-standing partnership with FX and putting any future Sons of Anarchy expansions on hold, but with this update from the show’s creator, it appears a prequel, or another extension of the biker drama, could eventually materialize.

In the meantime, Sutter and Sagal are reuniting for Khorus Harmonia, a limited-run choral concert conceived by Sagal with a book and staging by Sutter, offering a different kind of creative collaboration while the door to SOA remains slightly open. Sutter is also staying busy with an untitled MGM+ noir drama centered on a private investigator navigating 1950s Hollywood, as well as Nomad, an Apple TV+ outlaw biker series he co-created with Chris Collins, set to star Jason Momoa, further proving that the Sons of Anarchy spirit is still very much alive, even as fans wait to see if a true prequel ever rides forward.
