CPL 2025: Gudakesh Motie’s four-wicket haul fires Guyana Amazon Warriors into the final

Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) booked their place in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 final with a 14-run victory over Saint Lucia Kings in Qualifier 1 at the Providence Stadium on Sunday night. The win was built on disciplined bowling, led by left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who delivered a match-winning spell.

Guyana Amazon Warriors post 157 despite middle-order collapse

Asked to bat first after Saint Lucia Kings won the toss, the Warriors made a steady start. Ben McDermott (34 off 27) and Shai Hope (32 off 29) built a solid foundation, while Quentin Sampson (17 off 17) added quick runs with two big sixes.

Despite the early promise, the middle order faltered as Shimron Hetmyer, Moeen Ali, and Hassan Khan departed cheaply. However, the lower order revived the innings. Romario Shepherd’s explosive 21 off just 8 balls and Dwaine Pretorius’ 17 off 8 powered Guyana to a competitive total of 157 all out in 19.5 overs.

For Saint Lucia Kings, Tabraiz Shamsi (3/33) was the pick of the bowlers, while David Wiese (2/14) and Alzarri Joseph (2/34) also made key breakthroughs.

Khary Pierre’s heroics not enough for Saint Lucia Kings

In reply, Saint Lucia Kings endured a nightmare start. Openers Tim Seifert (1 off 5) and Johnson Charles (1 off 3) fell cheaply, followed by the dismissals of Tim David (0) and Aaron Jones (10). At 46/5, the Kings were staring at defeat.

But Khary Pierre had other plans. The all-rounder played a sensational knock of 50 off 29 balls, blasting five sixes and three fours to keep his side alive. Later, Tymal Mills (30 off 18) added fireworks with four boundaries and a six, narrowing the gap.

Despite their efforts, the Kings were bowled out for 143 in 19.1 overs, falling 14 runs short of the target.

The star of the night was undoubtedly Gudakesh Motie, whose brilliant spell dismantled the Kings’ batting order. He returned 4/30 in his four overs, striking at crucial moments to tilt the game Guyana’s way.

Veteran spinner Imran Tahir (2/22) provided vital support, while Dwaine Pretorius (2/24) ensured the middle overs stayed under control. Together, they never allowed the Kings’ batters to settle, despite Pierre and Mills’ late resistance.

Player of the Match

For his match-winning four-wicket haul, Gudakesh Motie was named Player of the Match. His control, variations, and ability to pick wickets under pressure were key in defending a modest total.

With this win, Guyana Amazon Warriors stormed into the CPL 2025 final. Meanwhile, Saint Lucia Kings will have another shot at reaching the final when they face the winner of the Eliminator in Qualifier 2.
