Colman Domingo took the stage as host of Saturday Night Live for the first time, opening with a hilarious monologue, including a joke about the viewers of Euphoria.
The Emmy-winning actor spoke about his time in the entertainment industry, stating that his many roles can make it difficult for audiences to immediately place where they recognize him from. With a mix of self-deprecating humor, he hinted that the reasoning behind this might be because he has appeared in several projects, such as Fear the Walking Dead, iCarly, and Euphoria.
Domingo continued by joking that he has a knack for guessing which role audiences recognize him from based on who they are, taking playful jabs at viewers of certain shows. He stated that different demographics tend to associate him with different projects, pointing to series like Fear the Walking Dead and Euphoria as examples. For the latter, he said the demographic was usually girls under 20 years old and creepy men over 30 years old.
Aside from the jokes, he shifted his focus to something more important. He said his goal as host of Saturday Night Live was to create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, similar to what guests might experience in his own home. He began by acknowledging the people in the show who would usually not receive a lot of, if any, recognition despite the crucial roles they played. He even included audience members in his monologue.
He actively directed the show’s production crew in real time. He requested music and lighting that would best complement a diverse cast, then turned his attention to the camera work, asking for a more stylized, close-in shot. He also made comments about his age, prompting the camera to adjust its angle accordingly.
Domingo then brought in Saturday Night Live cast member Jeremy Culhane on stage. He told him to look at the camera. The moment became unintentionally funny when Culhane initially stared into the wrong camera before the crew notified him. Once they corrected it, his previously exaggerated expression turned into an awkward but hilarious shot.
The host proceeded to include the audience during his monologue. He asked one audience member how she got tickets for the show. After she mentioned knowing someone who worked on the show, Domingo jokingly responded with, “That’s hot.” Then he asked if it was a cast member, when she revealed that it was one of Saturday Night Live’s writers, Domingo said in mock disappointment, “Don’t tell people that.”
Domingo ended his monologue by returning to the stage and said he would usually be in bed by now, but the show must go on. He added that things were just getting started before exiting the stage.
Saturday Night Live airs new episodes on Saturdays at 11:30 PM ET and 8:30 PM PT on NBC.
