Clair Obscur Is Better On Xbox Game Pass For One Reason, & PlayStation May Never Catch On

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is easily one of my favorite games of all time at this point, but there’s one missing feature that, as a PlayStation user, I hope gets implemented at some point in the near future. Unfortunately, there’s no built-in cross-save functionality for Clair Obscur, which is totally fine if you’re a Game Pass member. One major advantage to the Game Pass service is its Play Anywhere function, which lets you sync up your saves in Clair Obscur between your Xbox console and PC, but PlayStation users are out of luck unless Clair Obscur adds the feature itself.

This highlights a major issue with PlayStation’s lack of player-friendly features in the modern age of gaming, where gamers are no longer limited to playing their favorite games on a single platform. I don’t see any indication that PlayStation will ever incorporate a built-in cross-save feature either, largely because it doesn’t have the same sort of relationship that Xbox and Microsoft do. At the end of the day, if PlayStation users want cross-play functionality for their favorite games like Clair Obscur, it’s going to come down to the game developers incorporating it themselves at launch or through major updates post-launch.

PlayStation Needs Cross-Save For Clair Obscur

Starting From Scratch Makes PlayStation The Least Ideal Platform To Play Clair Obscur

Because there is no cross-play option for PlayStation, playing Clair Obscur on the platform is the least ideal way to play. Many players would benefit from the option to pick up on their gaming laptop where they left off on theirconsole when they are out and about. However, that’s really only an option if you’re a Game Pass member using Xbox and Windows. For a game like Clair Obscur, starting over from scratch means you have to go through and acquire your best weapons, favorite Pictos, etc. all over again, and many players will find this disheartening.

If you plan to play on multiple platforms, there’s basically no reason to start a run on PlayStation at all.

Not being able to pick up where you left off also means you have to rebuild all your characters, re-equip every Lumina, re-select every skill, and more. This isn’t ideal by any means, especially for players who are pressed for time. If you plan to play on multiple platforms, there’s basically no reason to start a run on PlayStation at all.

I Hope Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Next Update Includes This Mod Feature, But It’s A Long Shot

Co-op mode in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 might be a divisive feature that Sandfall Interactive won’t add, but after using the mod, I hope it does.

The issue isn’t with the game itself, but with PlayStation’s lack of versatility compared to Xbox/PC. Steam Deck users are equally at a loss here if trying to load saves from a console, as Steam Deck doesn’t natively support Game Pass, though there are a few workarounds that make it possible to load up your Game Pass saves on the Steam Deck. However, Steam’s cloud save functionality means you can still cross-save from your PC to Steam Deck, making PlayStation the only major platform where your saves are “stuck in one place,” so to speak.

Cross-Save In Clair Obscur Will Be In Developers’ Hands

PlayStation Users Aren’t Getting Cross-Save Unless Sandfall Rolls It Out Themselves

Ultimately, a cross-save feature for Clair Obscur that enables universal cross-play functionality will be left up to developers at Sandfall Interactive. This might be a big ask, and may not even be on the studio’s radar at all considering they are focused on quality of life improvements and giving players incredible new gameplay options such as damage modifiers, the ability to re-match secret bosses, etc. If it is implemented at some point in the future, I know for sure that PlayStation users would be ecstatic.

Will There Be DLC For Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s creative director and CEO Guillaume Broche says DLC has always been a plan, but game’s success delays it a bit.

Speaking from personal experience, I have one save file on my sixth NG+ run on PC that I desperately want to be able to transfer over to my PlayStation. I started a new run on PlayStation to be able to compare the experience from one platform to the other, and I am enjoying the game equally on both. However, I’d love to be able to jump back and forth with the same play-through so that I don’t have to reorient myself every time I switch over.

Ultimately, Game Pass/Xbox users are at an advantage here. I found myself wanting an Xbox console of my own for the first time in a long time, which is a testament to how much value Game Pass adds to the system compared to services like PS Plus. When it comes to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players like myself want to be able to enjoy this incredible game in as many ways as possible, and PlayStation’s lack of a Play Anywhere equivalent is a major limitation in that regard.
