It’s always sunny for Charlie Day until his new comedy thriller Kill Me takes a dark turn.

Kill Me stars Day as Jimmy, who “didn’t try to kill himself. Or at least, he’s pretty sure he didn’t. With the help of a reluctant 911 operator, he sets out on a darkly comedic amateur investigation to solve the ultimate mystery: is he being stalked by a killer, or chasing himself?” The cast also includes Allison Williams, Giancarlo Esposito, Aya Cash, and Jessica Harper.

Day’s new comedy-thriller has debuted with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it only the second film of the actor’s career to receive such a strong reception. Kill Me reviews state that it’s an “empathetic portrayal of mental health,” with some critics calling Day’s performance a “revelation.” Day, known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, has had impressive RT scores across his career, but only one other movie has achieved a perfect 100%.

Day’s lowest-rated movie was the 2023 release Fool’s Paradise, which achieved 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, where the actor plays a recently released mental health patient alongside Ken Jeong. Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which stars Day as the iconic Nintendo game character Luigi alongside Chris Pratt’s Mario as they take on another adventure.

Kill Me, directed by Peter Warren, known for Ghost Town and Sid Is Dead, has proven to take audiences by surprise after its release at SXSW. In an interview with Deadline, Warren expressed his love of murder mysteries and even stated that it’s his “favorite genre.” Day’s co-star Esposito also spoke on the journey Day’s character Jimmy takes during the film.

“There’s something fantastic that happens with Charlie’s character. When do you see a character who is trying to solve it for himself? He’s had past experience with [depression and suicidality], so he’s already labeled. He’s a pariah to himself already… But in this instance, he is the forward motion in his own life. He’s trying to figure out, ‘Wait a minute, this didn’t happen. What’s going on?’ He’s so committed. And that is a different character than you’ve ever seen before, someone who is really fighting their own battle to understand and is convinced that he’s going to figure it out. It’s kind of wonderful.”

Kill Me had its world premiere at SXSW on March 12, but at the time of writing, a wider theatrical release has yet to be announced.
