CBS Spoils Kayce & Monica’s Marshals Relationship Status Ahead Of Yellowstone Spinoff Debut

Amid Kelsey Asbille’s absence in the Yellowstone sequel, CBS spoils the status of Kayce and Monica’s marriage ahead of Marshals‘ debut. The Yellowstone franchise is set to return in the 2025-2026 TV cycle with its very first contemporary spinoff. Continuing the story of Kayce after the events of the flagship, Marshals is shaping to be a departure from anything that Taylor Sheridan has done in the neo-Western universe.

Marshals is the first of the two direct sequel series in the Yellowstone franchise, the second one being Rip and Beth’s Dutton Ranch. That said, since Cole Hause and Kelly Reilly’s characters moved out of the long-time Dutton property, Kayce is the only remaining of John Dutton III’s kids to still be in the same settlement. Despite not moving, Marshals has left his wife, Monica’s whereabouts unknown.

As its much-anticipated release nears, CBS is starting to ramp up its marketing efforts for the show. Aside from the previously-released trailers, the network has also rolled out official promo stills for Marshals‘ first couple of episodes. These reveal new information about the project that would otherwise be difficult to pinpoint in a promo clip. One of those interesting details is how Kayce continues to wear his wedding ring.

For context, when Yellowstone ended, Kayce solved his and Beth’s problem with their land by essentially giving it back to the people of the Broken Rock Reservation. The catch was that they would maintain a small property where he, Monica, and Tate could live comfortably. It’s unclear what happened to them after that, which leads to Luke Grimes’ character joining the marshals for a new job. Regardless, it’s likely tied to what happened to Monica.

There are theories about Monica’s death in Marshals, and frankly, that’s a solid explanation for her absence, albeit quite tragic. Years of trying to protect their family from the Duttons’ adversaries only for her to end up dying anyway would be a tragic way to kickstart the new show. That said, it’s also a compelling plot to launch the next era for Kayce.

Regardless, the fact that he continues to wear his wedding ring in Marshals indicates that the pair’s separation isn’t due to marital woes. It’s more likely that their circumstances dictated Monica’s absence from the show. Somehow, it’s a less sad way to write out Asbille’s character. Considering how solid the couple was throughout the events of Yellowstone, there’s something comforting about knowing that they remained committed to each other until the very end. As the biggest mystery Marshals, expect that the show will eventually offer an answer about the matter, especially since Tate is also involved in the series.
