CBS Future-Proofs NCIS For Timothy McGee's MCRT Exit

Warning! Spoilers ahead for NCIS season 23, episode 15, “Knick Knack.”At this point, Timothy McGee’s exit is almost inevitable, and CBS is starting to future-proof NCIS when the time comes. To say that the CBS procedural is at an important junction in its history would be an understatement. The 2025-2026 TV cycle has featured so many special narrative and production milestones, signaling the final phase of its rebirth following the departure of Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs back in 2021.

Specifically, the focus is on rebuilding after the unexpected death of NCIS Director Leon Vance. Losing him after 18 years in an untimely fashion has created a power vaccuum in the agency, and while it hasn’t created major problems of Alden Parker’s team, it’s vital that whoever succeeds him understands MCRT works best when it’s supported and not micro-managed. Right now, it’s clear that McGee is the ideal fit for the job, and although everything is still in limbo, CBS has started preparing NCIS his exit from his long-term post.

Curtis’ Return Sets Up NCIS’s Potential McGee Replacement (With A Major Caveat)

In NCIS season 23, episode 15, “Knick Knack” the team solves a death of ship museum curator that even ended up having ties to World War II. Interestingly, Kasie Hines is away for a personal trip and Curtis Hubley steps in to help the squad. This marks his first appearance in the ongoing season. For reference, J. Claude Deering’s character is a tech operator for the agency and not an agent, so he cannot be an immediate replacement for McGee.

NCIS season 23, episode 12 delivers a major revelation that retcons the show’s 18-year history and alters the course of Timothy McGee’s future.

That said, his return is an indication that CBS is preparing for a major MCRT overhaul, as he can easily step in as additional manpower when Sean Murray’s character moves to a higher position. Finding a replacement for McGee is a tall order. As the longest-serving cast member of NCIS, this significant change to his character will have a major disruption to the series’ established dynamic. Becoming the director and leaving his agent’s desk downstairs means that his responsibilities will also change.

So finding a true and permanent MCRT member that can fill the void that he will leave can be a long-term process. However, having a rotating host of familiar faces like Curtis and even the Tony DiNozzo Jr.-coded, Dale Sawyer, eases the pressure to rush the process. It also gives these side characters their time under the spotlight, and maybe even the chance to become a member of the main ensemble.

Why NCIS Has No Choice But To Force McGee Out Of MCRT

Admittedly, McGee taking over Vance’s role is not official. NCIS can take a while before confirming and might even use this situation to launch a new overarching narrative. That said, any long-time viewer of the series know that ultimately, McGee is the perfect replacement for Vance, in pretty much all aspects. Murray’s character would also be tapped in to be acting director, and he did so in an effective way. During Vance’s conversation with Young Ducky that led to his twist death, he cited McGee’s knack for leadership, meaning that he was vouching for him. No one else will be as equipped to lead the agency than NCIS’s most veteran character.

Vance’s NCIS Replacement Forces Timothy McGee To Leave MCRT

Timothy McGee will have to eventually leave MCRT after more than 2 decades once NCIS officially confirms its undisputed Leon Vance replacement.

In addition to this, McGee’s story has been stagnated for so long. This was primarily due to the lack of opportunities for upward mobility in the organization after he initially turned down being the supervisor of MCRT. He applied to be the Deputy Director of NCIS, but he didn’t get it. This is the only chance that CBS has to solve his issue without anymore major NCIS disruptions. Choosing someone else over him would undoubtedly create backlash that is bigger than when he didn’t replace Gibbs after he left.
