Carrick doing ´an excellent job´ at Man Utd, says Ratcliffe

Michael Carrick has done an “excellent job” as Manchester United’s interim head coach, according to the club’s co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.

The former Red Devils midfielder returned to Old Trafford on a temporary basis in January, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick has overseen an upturn in fortunes by winning six of his eight games in charge, while his tally of 19 points during this period is the most by any Premier League side.

There have subsequently been calls for the 44-year-old to be given the job on a permanent basis.

However, Ratcliffe would not be drawn on questions regarding extending Carrick’s stint in the Old Trafford dugout, saying: “No, not going there.

“He is doing an excellent job, yes, absolutely.”

Ratcliffe’s immediate focus is on United securing Champions League qualification for the first time in three seasons, with the Red Devils sitting third in the table – ahead of Aston Villa via goal difference.

“Clearly, we are thinking about that [Champions League qualification],” he added. “But there are still seven or eight games to go, so still a while yet.”

United have the opportunity to pull clear of Villa – and potentially strengthen their hold on a Champions League place – when the sides go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Sunday.
