Brighton seal deal for Sunderland teenager Watson

Brighton have agreed a deal to sign Sunderland’s teenage talent Tommy Watson after the end of this season.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side were linked with the 18-year-old forward in the last two transfer windows, though were unable to seal the transfer.

However, Brighton confirmed on Tuesday that a move reportedly worth up to £10million has been agreed for Watson to join the club when the next transfer window opens in July.

Watson, who has just 17 first-team appearances for Sunderland, will be available for Regis Le Bris’ side until the end of the 2024-25 campaign before moving to Brighton on a four-year deal, with the option of a fifth.

“Tommy is an exciting young talent who we have been tracking for a significant period of time,” Brighton’s technical director David Weir said.

“He’s had an excellent breakthrough season with Sunderland, and we are looking forward to him joining us in the summer.

“However, for now, his full focus is on helping them finish their season as strongly as possible.”

The England Under-18 international made his Championship debut in April 2023 against Huddersfield Town.

Watson caught the attention of many, however, when scoring twice in a 2-1 win over Stoke City in December.

He has struggled throughout an injury-hit campaign this term, though, playing just 542 minutes in the Championship across his 14 appearances.
