Blue Bloods’ spinoff show, Boston Blue, has become an overnight sensation with many familiar faces returning for the newest installment of the franchise. However, one person is noticeably missing, Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan. And, Donnie Wahlberg has finally broken the silence regarding his TV father’s return.

Wahlberg, who portrays the show’s protagonist, Danny Reagan, told Parade that he hoped Selleck would join the cast of Boston Blue eventually. “Of course, I spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do. And I can’t really get into the details of those conversations, but he’s been very supportive,” he explained.

However, he also said that while the actor was supportive of the spinoff, his return would rely on several factors. He stated that the timing had to be right and Frank’s appearance would have to make sense for him to star or guest star on the show. Wahlberg added that, should Selleck ever want to return, he would make sure to meet all of his conditions.

I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes. Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it.

While Frank’s return isn’t guaranteed, one character from Blue Bloods will have a consistent presence in Boston Blue season 1. It was confirmed that Maria Baez, who is portrayed by Marisa Ramirez, will be a recurring character in the show (at least in the first season).

Officially getting together romantically in the final season of Blue Bloods, Maria and Danny are still in a relationship in Boston Blue. However, since the former NYPD detective left the city to take on a position in Massachusetts, the pair will now have to be in a long-distance relationship, which will almost certainly bring a decent amount of tension to the police procedural drama.

Boston Blue has a massive cast starring alongside Wahlberg. The show features Sonequa Martin-Green (Lena Silver), Ernie Hudson (Reverend Edwin Peters), Maggie Lawson (Sarah Silver), Marcus Scribner (Jonah Silver), and Gloria Reuben (Mae Silver).

Boston Blue will release new episodes every Friday at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT on CBS.
