Black Jack’s Return Cancelled Despite Fan Hopes in Final Season

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Outlander Season 8! Sorry, Black Jack fans, you’ll be holding your breath if you’re expecting the beloved season 3 character to make a return in Outlander‘s eighth and final season.

The historical romance, based on the 1991 novel written by Diana Gabaldon, follows the story of Claire Beauchamp, a World War II combat nurse played by Caitríona Balfe, who is mysteriously transported back to 1743 Scotland. It’s there she meets Jamie Fraser [ Sam Heughan], in what becomes an adventure full of love, loss, and the internal battle between the past and future.

While some familiar faces are returning for the final season, rumors about bringing Tobias Menzies‘ Jonathan Randall, a.k.a. Black Jack, back from the dead before Outlander bid farewell to its loyal viewers, has proven to be just that, with season 8 set to focus on the American Revolution arriving at Fraser’s Ridge. In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender ahead of Outlander‘s eighth season, producers Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis revealed that Black Jack — who was confirmed by both Menzies, and Gabaldon, to have been killed by Fraser in the Battle of Culloden in 1746, at the end of season 2 — was just one of the show’s many characters they wished they could’ve “played more of.”

Maril Davis: I mean, there’s so much in the books that I wish we could have played more of, that we just don’t have time with. I’m thrilled we got a little more time with Murtagh, that wasn’t in the books. We wanted to have a little more time with Black Jack, but that didn’t happen. I mean, that’s an impossible question. There’s just so many. There’s so much material in the books that we couldn’t get to. So, it’s always about trying to find a cohesive storyline that works in the number of episodes we have. So yeah, there’s a ton of stuff, but I’m very happy with where we’ve ended up and how the writers have crafted the story.

Even if they were unable to make Black Jack happen, there’s still a big appetite for more stories in the Outlander universe, as evidenced by the 2025 spin-off, Outlander: Blood of My Blood — and a host of source material to draw from, too. In addition to the core Outlander novels, the franchise includes several novellas on characters other than Jamie and Claire, a graphic novel, and a spin-off book series centered on the character Lord John Grey. And though Roberts stayed fairly tight-lipped on what’s to come, he did share that there have been talks about more spin-offs.

Matthew B. Roberts: We’ve been definitely talking about more spin-offs, and trying to figure out where to go next. I won’t break the news now, but there might be some news in the future.

Outlander returns to Starz on Friday, March 6.
