BCCI unveils India’s white-ball squads for Australia tour; Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as ODI captain

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India men squads for the upcoming limited-overs tour of Australia, comprising three ODIs and five T20Is in October-November. The series marks another high-profile contest between the two cricketing giants, as both teams prepare for a busy international season ahead.

Shubman Gill takes charge as ODI captain

In a major development, Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s new ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma. This will be Gill’s first ODI series as skipper, following his recent stints as captain in Tests and T20Is. The decision underlines BCCI’s intention to build a strong leadership group for the future.

Although Rohit has been relieved of captaincy duties, he remains part of the ODI squad and will return to action alongside Virat Kohli. The veteran pair has not featured in any international match since the Champions Trophy final in March earlier this year. Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain for the series, adding further stability to India’s middle order.

At just 26, Gill has shown composure and maturity beyond his years. His leadership journey began earlier this year when he captained India in the home Test series against England, which ended in a competitive 2-2 draw. He recently guided India to a convincing win over the West Indies in the first Test of their ongoing series, triumphing by an innings and 140 runs.

While Gill’s captaincy experience in List-A cricket is limited—only six matches with a 5-1 win-loss record—his tactical awareness and ability to remain calm under pressure have caught the selectors’ attention. His elevation reflects the board’s long-term vision to groom him as a potential all-format leader.
