Arsenal pushing to sign Williams

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has reportedly made contact with the representative of Nico Williams over a summer transfer.

The Gunners are expected to make plenty of changes this summer. A marquee striker is one of the top priorities for manager Mikel Arteta.

A versatile winger could be signed as well and Foot Mercato claim that Berta has entered talks with the agent of Athletic Bilbao star Williams.

Williams was a top target for the Gunners last summer, but the Spaniard decided to stay with the Basque outfit for another 12 months.

He is likely to pursue a new challenge later this year and Arsenal seem determined to beat the competition to secure his services.

Williams has an affordable release clause worth £48m in his contract, but he is expected to demand wages of more than £300,000 per week.

Arsenal could be prepared to commit to such a huge outlay as they aim to make a strong challenge for the Premier League title next term.
