Leoni out for a year after ACL – Slot

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that Giovanni Leoni will be sidelined for a year after his serious knee injury against Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round.

The Italian made his first-team debut for the Reds in the League Cup fixture. He had a promising performance, but it ended on a sour note after an anterior cruciate ligament damage.

Speakin in today’s press conference, Slot acknowledged that the former Parma man is not in a good place and will be on the sidelines for 12 months.

He told reporters (via Liverpoolfc.com): “He is not in a good place, of course, because he tore his ACL and it means he will be out for a year.”

With Leoni’s injury, Liverpool have just three fit centre-backs in the squad in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez to rely upon.

Out of the trio, Konate and Gomez have been injury prone in their careers too. The Reds are expected to sign another centre-back in January.
