Following her cousin’s big screen return, Kara Zor-El’s DC Universe adventure will be one of the big spotlights in 2026 through Supergirl. The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate is wasting no time in getting the iconic Kryptonians set up in James Gunn’s superhero reboot, as both heroes are getting featured from the get-go.
By next year, it will have been 41 years since the Girl of Steel headlined her own film, as Helen Slater starred as the titular heroine in 1984. House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock was cast on January 29, 2024, as the beloved superhero, with I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie directing the Supergirl movie.
In a new interview with Variety, Ana Nogueira, who penned the script for Supergirl, elaborated about getting into this iteration of Krypton’s last daughter. According to the former actress-turned-writer, “I was always like, ‘I can’t get my head around the version of the character that is so sunny.’”
However, she found what she was looking for when exploring “[Tom King’s] rougher and grittier and edgier and funnier” take with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which ran for eight issues between August 2021 and April 2022. “When I read it, I was like, ‘There she is,’” she added.
Alcock made her DCU debut in the Superman movie, where she showed up for a cameo at the very end to pick up her dog, Krypto, while sharing a brief scene with David Corenswet’s Man of Steel, setting up her 2026 entry. Principal photography wrapped on the Australian actress’s installment on May 10, 2025.
Kara has mostly been portrayed through live-action TV, including Melissa Benoist, who starred in the Supergirl TV show between 2015 and 2021, as the series became part of the Arrowverse in season 2 when it moved from CBS to The CW. Sasha Calle was cast as the Maiden of Might for 2023’s The Flash, in the DCEU movie timeline.
King, who is one of Gunn’s architects for the DCU, is also working on DC Studios’ Lanterns for HBO and is developing Mister Miracle as an animated show. Characters from his book, such as Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) and Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), will make their live-action debut in Alcock’s project.
After playing Arthur Curry in the previous franchise, including two solo films, with Aquaman and the Last Kingdom finishing the DCEU in 2023, Jason Momoa will be portraying Lobo in the DCU sci-fi movie. Supergirl is set to release in theaters on June 26, 2026.
