Amorim on Mainoo snub vs Fulham

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has told Kobbie Mainoo that he is fighting for a starting spot alongside Bruno Fernandes this campaign.

The England international has been an unused substitute in the first two games of the season and when pressed on the situation, Amorim said:

“No, he is fighting for the position now with Bruno (Fernandes).

“And I changed two midfielders. I like Mason Mount there because we want to score a goal.

“And then when I change it, I felt that the team needed to return to one holding midfielder.

“So he just needs to fight for the position with Bruno in training. Like it should be at Manchester United.”

Mainoo has fallen down the pecking order over the past year. Amorim has previously said that he can’t play in central midfield.

He experimented him from the number 10 role during the backend of last season, but that position has already been occupied this term.

With the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Mainoo’s chances of regular playing time from attacking midfield are scarce.

There is speculation that Mainoo could be on the move and clubs could become alert after Amorim’s decision to ignore him again.

Chelsea are reportedly one of the Englishman’s main admirers.
