Amorim labels Onana errors as ´team mistakes´

Andre Onana’s errors are as much the team’s as they are his, according to Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim.

Onana made significant blunders as United drew 2-2 with Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday.

The goalkeeper, who had boldly claimed that United were “way better” than Lyon in the build-up, was at fault for both Lyon goals.

He let Thiago Almada’s 25th-minute free-kick float over his head to give Lyon the lead, before allowing Rayan Cherki to equalise at the death, cancelling out Joshua Zirkzee’s 88th-minute header.

Onana has now made eight errors leading to goals since the start of last season, more than any other Premier League goalkeeper in all competitions.

But Amorim told TNT Sports: “When one player has a mistake, all the team makes a mistake, so we continue like that.

“We are really disappointed [to concede late]. We should have taken a one-goal advantage to the next game but we have the next game at home – we will try to win that game.”

When questioned over his faith in Onana, Amorim replied: “We continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win the match.”

On a more positive note for United, 19-year-old centre-back Leny Yoro headed home his first goal for the club on the stroke of half-time, drawing Amorim’s side level.

Yoro, a big-money signing from Lille last summer, missed much of the season due to injury, but he has played regularly under Amorim.

And while he did not enjoy his goal, due to there being “no time for celebration”, the defender insisted United must not let their heads drop ahead of next week’s second leg.

“I think if we won 2-1 we would be more confident [to make it through]. It’s difficult but we need to keep our heads up. We didn’t lose, we can win at Old Trafford,” he said.

Onana and United will look to bounce back when they face in-form Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday.
