Amazon Prime Video’s God of War showrunner has provided encouraging updates on the upcoming video game adaptation. The God of War TV adaptation is one of many high-budget speculative fiction projects and video game-based shows in development at Prime Video. The series is still in pre-production.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier had the opportunity to speak with Ronald D. Moore about For All Mankind. Moore provided some insight on his process going into God of War, sharing that he’s impressed by the source material and is having a ton of fun diving into the game franchise’s world.

Moore admits that he hasn’t developed a video game adaptation before, but he shares that he’s working closely with God of War creative director Corey Barlog, collaborating to build the story. Read the full quote below:

ScreenRant: Now, you’ve had a hand in shaping iconic sci-fi franchises that I absolutely love. You’ve got God of War coming up. What can you share about that version? How might it differ than any other version that we’ve seen?

Ronald D. Moore: Well, I can’t get really into the creative, but I can tell you now, we’re working on the scripts right now, and this just an amazing property. It’s a deep mythology. It’s a lot of interconnected pieces. I’ve gotten to know Corey Barlog, who is creative director of the games, and he’s a remarkable person and just knows that the mythology backwards and forward and just keeps it all in his head. You can ask him a question, [like], “Tell me about why Kratos did this,” and then an hour will go by because he just knows it cold.

So, I’ve been really impressed by just digging into something that is as well-thought-out and rich as this environment is. I’ve never done a video game adaptation, so I didn’t really know exactly what I was going to be facing, but it’s really been fun. I can tell you that.

This Is A Promising Update For Amazon’s Adaptation

The God of War video games are among the most celebrated titles in recent years, known for their vibrant world-building and mature narrative work. Much like The Last of Us, the character-focused story of the Greek god Kratos and his son Atreus appears to be ripe for a television adaptation. Executing that adaptation properly is the tricky part.

Adapting below IP is difficult in any scenario, but showrunner Ronald D. Moore will likely receive some flak from audiences for not being a gamer himself. His repertoire of beloved sci-fi shows like For All Mankind, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, and Outlander should be enough to satisfy concerns, but if not, this quote will be.

Moore sharing that he’s working closely with Corey Barlog is vital to this series’ success, as it ensures that the adaptation is coming straight from the primary source. This might not feel like drastic news, but Moore’s enthusiasm to be working with the video games’ creative director is incredibly exciting.

Ronald D. Moore might not have sunk 1,000 hours into God of War, but he’s an accomplished industry professional who knows how to make outstanding fiction TV shows. He and Barlog bring a combination of TV production experience, storytelling for the medium, and adept knowledge of the video game IP.

God Of War Is In Good Hands

I wouldn’t consider myself the world’s leading expert on God of War, but I have played both the recent video games andseen enough television to know what makes a good adaptation. While fans of the franchise might want someone in charge who’s an avid gamer, I’ll put my money on an experienced showrunner every time.
