Alastair Cook lists his top four all-time great openers

Former England captain and Test cricket’s sixth-highest run-scorer, Sir Alastair Cook, recently shared his personal list of the greatest opening batters of all time. Speaking on OverlapCricket, Cook humbly placed himself at the bottom of his top-four list while showering praise on some iconic names. The former English cricketer picked Australian legend Matthew Hayden as the number one pick and then followed it up with South African great Graeme Smith and India’s explosive opener Virender Sehwag.

“I always thought Hayden (Matthew Hayden) was the best,” Cook said, naming the aggressive Australian left-hander Hayden as his No. 1 pick.

“I think for me the second number would be Graeme Smith. Then Sehwag (Virender Sehwag) and I, I am quite happy to sit at the bottom of the list of best openers,” added Cook.

Cook on why the Aussie icon leads his list

Explaining his choice, Cook elaborated on what made Hayden a nightmare for bowlers. He emphasized that Hayden’s transformation into a powerful and intimidating batter made him the kind of player every bowler dreaded facing, highlighting his unmatched impact at the top of the order.

“But I honestly think Hayden would be at the top, I saw him, he started very modestly in the beginning but then what Hayden started doing was that, he was hitting seven, centuries. For the sake of argument if you ask every bowler who they would least like to bowl to, they will say Hayden,” Cook added further.
