Al-Ahli 4-1 Al-Najma: Toney puts penalty miss behind him with second-half hat-trick

Ivan Toney had a penalty saved but recovered to score a second-half hat-trick as Al-Ahli beat 10-man Al-Najma 4-1 to draw level with Al-Hilal at the top of the Saudi Pro League.

Toney was denied from 12 yards by Victor Braga in the 37th minute at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium, with the visiting goalkeeper getting down to his right to make the save following Guga’s handball.

Al-Ahli were 1-0 down by that point, after Lazaro skipped past a couple of defenders and tucked home from an acute angle in the 27th minute.

The hosts thought they had a second penalty deep into first-half stoppage time, when Braga appeared to mistime his punch and catch Toney, but a VAR review resulted in the decision being overturned due to a lack of meaningful contact.

Al-Ahli did not need long to draw level in the second half, though, with Valentin Atangana stooping to head past Braga three minutes after the restart.

The momentum was firmly with the hosts from that moment on, and after Al-Najma had Felippe Cardoso sent off for a second bookable offence, Toney was given a simple finish by Riyad Mahrez’s centre from the right.

Toney doubled up with a far-post finish three minutes from time, and another penalty – four minutes into stoppage time – allowed him to complete his third hat-trick of the season.

In Thursday’s other games, Al-Riyadh beat Al-Kholood 2-0, with both goals coming in the first six minutes, and Al-Ettifaq withstood a comeback attempt from Al-Fateh in a 4-3 win.

Data Debrief: Toney recovers from first Pro League miss

Toney’s penalty miss was his first in the Saudi Pro League. After scoring with each of his first 17 attempts in the competition, his record now stands at 18 goals from 19 attempts.

The striker was close to perfect in the Premier League for Brentford, too, netting with 11 of his 12 spot-kicks.

But a second-half treble put that penalty miss behind him, and he now has 23 goals in the competition this season (including eight penalties) – five more than any other player.
