Aakash Chopra explains RCB’s explosive batting surge in IPL 2026

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) delivered a statement performance on 5 April 2026, overpowering Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with a commanding 43-run victory at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Asked to bat first, RCB unleashed a batting blitz and piled up a staggering 250/3 — the highest total ever recorded against CSK in IPL history.

The innings was headlined by Tim David’s breathtaking finish, as he smashed an unbeaten 70 off just 25 balls at a staggering strike rate of 280. His assault in the 19th over, where he took Jamie Overton apart for 30 runs, completely shifted the momentum beyond CSK’s reach.

In reply, CSK’s chase never truly took off, with their top order collapsing inside the first three overs. While Sarfaraz Khan (50) and Prashant Veer (43) attempted a recovery, the early damage proved too much to overcome, as they finished on 207, falling short by 43 runs.

Aakash Chopra decodes RCB’s explosiveness in IPL 2026

Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra believes RCB’s destructive batting this season is no coincidence but the result of a carefully assembled squad loaded with experience and firepower.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted that RCB have avoided experimentation with inexperienced overseas players, instead opting for proven match-winners. He pointed out the presence of players like Phil Salt, David, Romario Shepherd, and Josh Hazlewood as a key factor behind their consistency and explosiveness.

According to Chopra, this experienced overseas core ensures that RCB are never short of power hitters or game-changers at any stage of the innings. The balance between stability and aggression allows them to accelerate without taking undue risks.

“Let’s be very, very honest. When you look at this team, they have an excellent collection. All overseas players are experienced. They haven’t kept a novice. They are very, very established. You find Phil Salt, Tim David, Romario Shepherd, and Josh Hazlewood will come in place of Jacob Duffy,” said Chopra.

He also emphasized that RCB’s Indian batting lineup complements the overseas stars perfectly. With Virat Kohli anchoring the innings, supported by seasoned names like Devdutt Padikkal and Jitesh Sharma, the team boasts both reliability and attacking depth. Chopra reserved special praise for Rajat Patidar, noting his exceptional ability against spin bowling. While comparing him to Shreyas Iyer, he acknowledged that although Iyer has a stronger international record against spin, Patidar remains one of the most effective players in Indian conditions.

“Who are the Indians? You can’t get anyone better than Virat Kohli. After that, Devdutt Padikkal, who is also not a spring chicken. He didn’t start playing yesterday. Jitesh Sharma, once again, has been in the circuit for a very long time. Rajat Patidar, not many people play spin better than him. I wouldn’t say at par with Shreyas Iyer, because Shreyas has played a lot better spin in international cricket, but he is very, very good. So they have experience and all are explosive,” added Chopra.

Mumbai Indians the closest challengers

While praising RCB’s batting might, Chopra also assessed how other teams stack up against them in IPL 2026. He opined that the Mumbai Indians are perhaps the only side capable of matching RCB’s firepower on paper.

However, he added that even strong teams like the Punjab Kings might struggle to replicate the same level of consistency and explosiveness. According to Chopra, RCB’s combination of experienced overseas stars and in-form Indian players makes them a different beast altogether this season.
