A League Of Their Own Star D’Arcy Carden On Shocking Cancellation 2 Years Later

Two years later, A League of Their Own star D’Arcy Carden addresses Prime Video’s shocking cancellation of the series, and why she still wants to see the story completed. Inspired by the 1992 A League of Their Own movie starring Tom Hanks, the series follows a women’s professional baseball team that forms during World War II.

A League of Their Own season 2 was initially canceled, but a strong fan campaign led it to being renewed in 2023 as a final season comprised of four episodes. After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though, Prime Video reversed the decision and announced that season 2 had been canceled, a decision that proved to be shocking and controversial.

While speaking with Collider two years later, D’Arcy Carden, who plays Greta Gill, reveals that she knows what the show’s ending was meant to be after being told by her co-star and series co-creator Abbi Jacobson. She describes the ending as being “fulfilling”, and that it’s “not fair” that the rest of the world didn’t get to see it. Check out her comments below:

I know what the end was. Abbi took me through what the end of the season would look like. When it was sort of presented like a shortened season, that was sort of even a question. Do we even want to do that? Is that too short? When Abbi told me what it would look like, I was like, “We have to do it. It’s too good. That has to be wrapped up in this way. That would be so fulfilling to us as actors, to the fans of the show, who put so much love and energy into it, that deserve the period at the end of the sentence instead of the dot, dot, dot.” Meaning I do have a little bit of closure because I kind of know where the characters end up at, but that’s not fair for everybody else.

Even though two years have passed and there is no sign of the show being revived, Carden is enthusiastic about the idea of a movie or another narrative format being used to deliver season 2’s story.

I think the story is worth telling, and it’s up to Abbi. However, she wants to do that, whether it’s, I don’t know, a book, a graphic novel, or a movie for other actors 15 years from now, a reading.

I would be down. Love those girls so much. That was a special time with special actors, and we really all fell in love with each other pretty hard.

What This Means For A League Of Their Own

A League of Their Own‘s cancellation is even more frustrating after hearing Carden’s tease about how satisfying the ending was going to be. Jacobson and the show’s creative team had a plan and were ready to execute it, only for Prime Video to reverse their decision.

With the ending already planned, Carden enthusiastic to return, and a strong fan campaign that made the initial renewal possible, there is still a possibility of season 2’s story happening one day, even if it’s not in the format of a television show. As Carden explains, though, that decision will be up to Jacobson.

The actor and co-creator has primarily done voice work, including in the recently released Netflix series Long Story Short, since A League of Their Own season 1. If she does decide to move forward with the story, it is unlikely to be at Prime Video, whose cancellation she deemed “bulls*** and cowardly.”

As frustrating as A League of Their Own‘s cancellation is, Carden’s comments make me hopeful that season 2’s story will eventually happen. The “little bit of closure” that she has from knowing the ending should be shared with the rest of the world, even if it’s as a movie or in a literary format instead of episodes of television.
