WARNING! This article contains major spoilers for George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight novella, on which A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 is based!
HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms put the spotlight on another era of House Targaryen’s family tree, with plenty more complicated relations and repeated names present after Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ story is largely centered on the tale of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire “Egg,” the Targaryens still play an integral role as the sitting royal family attempting to restore their fierce reputation.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ timeline is situated in the middle of HBO’s previous series, taking place about 80 years after House of the Dragon and approximately 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. As such, House Targaryen’s family members are in a daunting position with the last of their dragons having recently died out after the Dance of the Dragons and their loss of the Iron Throne being on the horizon.
However, plenty of Targaryens are still around during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with one even being a key character in Game of Thrones. Since the complex Targaryen family tree can get quite confusing, there’s now a breakdown of all their names, titles, and relations to one another during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms all in one place.
King Daeron II Targaryen
Father Of Maekar, Baelor, Aerys & Rhaegel
The sitting ruler on the Iron Throne during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is King Daeron II Targaryen. Daeron “the Good” Targaryen is the twelfth Targaryen King of Westeros, whose reign is best remembered for bringing Dorne into the Seven Kingdoms peacefully.
Daeron is the son of the late King Aegon IV Targaryen and his sister-wife Naera Targaryen, with his full-blooded sister being Princess Daenerys and his half-siblings including Brynden Rivers, Daemon Blackfyre, and Aegor Rivers. King Daeron II has four sons, Baelor, Aerys, Rhaegel, and Maekar, as well as several grandchildren, including Maekar’s six children, Baelor’s two kids, and Rhaegel’s three children.
Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen
Eldest Son Of King Daeron II, Older Brother Of Maekar & Father Of Baelor
During A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, the Prince of Dragonstone, Hand of the King, and heir to the Iron Throne is Daeron’s eldest son, Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen. In George R.R. Martin’s books, Baelor has his mother Myriah Martell’s dark hair instead of the Targaryens’ iconic silver hair, and is known for his respectability, skills as a warrior, and honor.
Baelor is the elder brother of Maekar, Aerys, and Rhaegel, and uncle to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Aerion, Daeron, Aemon, and Aegon. Played by actor Bertie Carvel in the Game of Thrones prequel, Baelor is married to Lady Jena Dondarrian and is the father of their two sons, Valarr and Matarys Targaryen.
Aerys Targaryen
Second Son Of King Daeron II, Younger Brother Of Baelor & Older Brother Of Maekar
King Daeron’s second-eldest son is Aerys Targaryen, younger brother to Baelor, and elder brother to Maekar and Rhaegel. He has a notable interest in prophecies, magic, and the potential for Targaryen dragons to return. While Aerys is married to Aelinor Penrose, the couple never has any children.
Rhaegel Targaryen
Third Son Of King Daeron II, Younger Brother Of Baelor & Aerys, Older Brother Of Maekar
The third son of King Daeron II Targaryen is Prince Rhaegel Targaryen. Rhaegel is the most mysterious of Daeron’s sons, with plenty of accusations that he was “mad” and sickly. In addition to being the younger brother of Baelor and Aerys as well as Maekar’s older brother, Rhaegel is married to Lady Ays Arryn and is the father of twins Aelor and Aelora, and Daenora Targaryen.
Maekar Targaryen
Fourth Son Of King Daeron II, Younger Brother Of Baelor, Father Of Daeron, Aerion, Aemon & Aegon
The fourth and youngest son of King Daeron II Targaryen and Myriah Martell is Prince Maekar Targaryen, played in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by Sam Spruell. Known for his harshness, impatience, and strength as a warrior, he rules as the Prince of Summerhall. Maekar is the father of Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, Aegon, Daella, and Rhae Targaryen, and is the younger brother of Baelor, Aerys, and Rhaegel.
Daeron “The Drunken” Targaryen
Eldest Son Of Prince Maekar, Older Brother Of Aerion, Aemon & Aegon
The eldest child of Prince Maekar Targaryen and Dyanna Dayne is Prince Daeron “The Drunken” Targaryen, played by My Lady Jane actor Henry Ashton in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Daeron stands out in Westerosi history for being one of Game of Thrones’ rare “dragon dreamers,” a Targaryen with prophetic dreams.
Daeron can often be consumed by his dragon dreaming ability, and isn’t fond of swordfighting like his brothers. He’s the older brother of Aerion, Aemon, Aegon, Daella, and Rhae, and is the cousin to Valarr and Matarys.
Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen
Second Son Of Prince Maekar Targaryen
Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen is the second-born son and child of Prince Maekar Targaryen, younger brother of Daeron, and older brother of Aemon and Aegon. Played by True Detective season 4 actor Finn Bennett, Aerion is remembered for his cruelty, arrogance, and fierceness as a fighter. Later, Aerion also becomes a significant example of House Targaryen being cursed with madness.
Aemon Targaryen
Third Son Of Prince Maekar, Brother Of Daeron, Aerion & Aegon
One of the most beloved Game of Thrones characters returns in a different era as a much younger man. Eventually known as Maester Aemon Targaryen in Game of Thrones, he’s the young Prince Aemon Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the third-born son of Prince Maekar, younger brother of Daeron and Aerion, and older brother of Aegon.
However, in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the approximately 20-year-old Aemon has already spent about a decade at the Citadel preparing to become a maester. That’s where he still is during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, whereas his brothers are all attending the Tourney at Ashford.
Aegon “Egg” Targaryen
Youngest Son Of Prince Maekar, Grandson Of King Daeron II, Younger Brother Of Daerion, Aerion & Aemon
The fourth and youngest son of Prince Maekar Targaryen, grandson of King Daeron II Targaryen, nephew of Baelor, and younger brother of Daeron, Aerion, and Aemon is Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell). During A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Aegon is a young boy brought to the Tourney at Ashford whose head is shaved by his older brother, Daeron, before he secretly flees and meets Ser Duncan the Tall, to whom “Egg” becomes a squire.
Brynden Rivers
Half-Brother Of King Daeron II Targaryen, Uncle Of Princes Baelor & Maekar
Another significant extended member of House Targaryen during this point in the Game of Thrones universe’s timeline is Brynden “Bloodraven” Rivers. He’s the bastard son of the late King Aegon IV Targaryen, half-brother of King Daeron II Targaryen, and uncle of Princes Baelor, Aerys, Rhaegel, and Maekar.
Since Brynden remains loyal to King Daeron II rather than his bastard half-brother during the First Blackfyre Rebellion, Bloodraven enjoys more substantial command and power in Westeros. However, Bloodraven eventually becomes more well-known in franchise lore as the true identity of the Three-Eyed Raven, even appearing in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
Daella Targaryen
Elder Daughter Of Prince Maekar, Sister Of Daeron, Aerion, Aemon & Aegon
Though little is known about Daella Targaryen’s history, she’s a member of the Targaryen family during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as the fourth child of Prince Maekar. Daella is the younger sister of Daeron, Aerion, and Aemon, and the older sister of Aegon and Rhae.
Rhae Targaryen
Youngest Child Of Prince Maekar, Youngest Sister Of Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, Aegon & Daella
The youngest child and daughter of Prince Maekar Targaryen is Princess Rhae Targaryen. She’s the only child of Maekar younger than Aegon, so she is extremely young during the timeline of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Like Daella, very little has been revealed about the life of Egg’s sister Rhae.
Valarr Targaryen
Elder Son Of Prince Baelor, Grandson Of King Daeron II, Cousin Of Daeron, Aerion, Aemon & Aegon
Also a key member of House Targaryen during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is Prince Valarr, the elder son of Prince Baelor, grandson of King Daeron II, and second-in-line to the Iron Throne. Like his father, Valarr is a dark-haired Targaryen and a skilled fighter, though his status means he’s unable to face dangerous opponents during the Tourney at Ashford.
Valarr is the older brother of Matarys and cousin of Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, and Egg, and is married to Kiera of Tyrosh.
Matarys Targaryen
Younger Son Of Prince Baelor & Brother Of Valarr
The second son of Prince Baelor and Jena Dondarrion is Prince Matarys Targaryen, who is third-in-line to the Iron Throne during A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1. Matarys is the younger brother of Valarr and cousin of Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, and Aegon.
