Pokémon Black Returns In Challenging New Unova Adventure

No matter what generation of Pokémon you’re a fan of, someone has you covered. The first four regions have official remakes, and fans have been diligently working to complete the rest.

Now, thanks to Pokémon Fangame News on X, we know that Vanta Black is out now, which you can play to relive your adventures in the Unova region.

An Underrated Region

After a year in development, Pokémon Vanta Black is finally available. All Unova Pokémon are available, as well as “Unova-adjacent” Pokédex entries like evolutions and alternate forms. “All Pokémon” have been touched up mechanically, alongside the addition of the fairy type, and modern battle mechanics like critical hit odds.

Naturally, quality-of-life features are in, like the ability to skip the tutorial, earn farmable resources in-game, and IV editing. Mobile PCs and instant shaky grass are features coming to Vanta Black, too.

Here’s the full pitch from the creator: “Vanta Black is a ROM hack of Pokémon Black 1 that aims to revamp the first Unova experience while keeping the game’s spirit intact. Many Pokémon have altered types, abilities, movepools, stats, and availability. Gym leaders and other boss battles have been increased in challenge level. The goal is for roughly a Renegade Platinum level of difficulty, so no worries about needing Kaizo skills here. Modern mechanics have been introduced, like critical hits and the type chart, which now includes the Fairy-type. New story events have been added to expand the region and flesh out its characters. Nearly the entire map of Unova is accessible in the main story. You can also find many boss trainers throughout the map to unlock rewards and resources.”

Although Vanta Black is now at version 1.3, the creator has a wishlist of features they want to add down the line. The main draw is a “complete and expansive post-game,” featuring “more Pokémon, legendary encounters, boss battles, and story.”

No matter what type of Pokémon you like or what gimmick you’re a big fan of, odds are there’s a fan game crafted to tailor specifically to that mechanic. Fans have been crafting Pokémon games for decades, and at this point, many creators have it down to a science. Projects like Pokémon Emerald Seaglass and Pokémon Lazarus have also become shining examples for the community in recent years.

While we wait for Pokémon to enter Gen 10 in 2027, there are still plenty of adventures to get through, officially or unofficially. The Pokémon fan game community is among the most talented in the industry, so there’s a lot to try if you’re really curious about the series and have exhausted all the official games in the lineup.
