Marvel’s Officially Unveils Wild New Guardians Line-Up

Knowing that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will only be launching with 20 playable characters ensures that the announcements for each one are that much more exciting. That is especially true, too, after Edge of Spider-Verse’s Peni Parker was just revealed to be part of the original, four-character Amazing Guardians team alongside Spider-Man, Star-Lord, and Ms. Marvel.

On Twitter/X, for instance, user Chromey McDry is thrilled about the premise of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ default team rosters being so diverse, stating that “it blows the doors open for any character to be with anyone.” Team names can be automatically generated based on the characters selected, meaning they hold little significance overall, but fans are tremendously excited about what this means for the following slate of ‘canon’ teams arriving on the roster.

Marvel Tōkon’s Future Teams Are Unpredictable Now

User Chromey McDry acknowledges that “this team does not exist outside of this timeline/game! So whoever they announce next really could be anyone,” and that’s true. There is an argument to be made that the Unbreakable X-Men is proof that there will be teams inspired by iconic Marvel ensembles—Captain America, Iron Man, and two unannounced characters forming an Avengers team, hypothetically—yet the Amazing Guardians’ line-up peppers some fascinating unpredictability to the mix, such as who Doctor Doom and Ghost Rider will be joining.

With only one villain character confirmed for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls so far, Doctor Doom (two, technically, with Danger), and the team assembly roster sheet declaring that players can “assemble your dream team of Marvel heroes and villains,” it is implied that we can expect three more villains to be announced that form their own canon, default team.

Now, many fans have since tossed aside the preconceived biases they had about what teams may be announced after the Amazing Guardians threw them for a loop. Reddit user CedeLovesKat, for example, questions whether Captain America and Iron Man may lead their own teams, with Captain America’s potentially being a “super spy/agent team” and Iron Man’s being a “super genius/scientists team” that could include Doctor Doom.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls teams like the Amazing Guardians (Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Peni Parker) or the Unbreakable X-Men (Storm, Magik, Wolverine, and Danger) are neat. In the Amazing Guardians, however, it is interesting to see how much more unique and untethered to comic book source material it is.

For example, Spider-Man and Peni Parker being lumped together makes sense, sure, but Star-Lord and Ms. Marvel being there seemingly suggests there are no other characters who’ll be on the roster that they would have made a better team with.

If that theory is correct, then it is fair to assume we won’t see Gamora, Drax, Rocket the Raccoon, or Groot as one of the remaining eight playable Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls characters, and maybe not even Captain Marvel, surprisingly. 20 characters does appear to be a staggeringly low number for a 4v4 tag fighter, and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls must consequently cherry-pick its characters carefully, with more playable characters hopefully released as post-launch DLC.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is scheduled to be released for PC and PS5 on August 6, 2026.
