CBS Officially Ends NCIS After 34 Years

Ever since premiering in 2003, the long-running procedural has been a staple of CBS’s yearly programming. The last few years have been quite tricky, as it had to reinvent itself following the exit of Mark Harmon via Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ retirement in NCIS season 19. Despite a difficult period of transition, the show is now closer to the end of the process.

The 2025-2026 TV cycle has been solid thus far for the procedural, as its latest iteration of MCRT with Alden Parker fully realized. Mixing compelling cases with great personal stories, NCIS season 23 has elevated its storytelling with some nostalgic returns, such as Vera Strickland and Ellie Bishop. All the while, there has apparently been a bubbling problem throughout the year, and it finally surfaces in “In Too Deep.”

Vance Tells Parker That NCIS Is Being Shut Down

Building from Vance and Parker’s conflict, NCIS season 23, episode 12 finally sees the Director admitting that the agency is in danger of being impacted by the ongoing budget cuts. As previously established, Army CID was facing RIF (Reduction in Force) and was in danger of being folded into NCIS instead. Vance has been working hard behind-the-scenes to make sure that his organization remains intact amid these changes. So, it’s a massive blow when he tells Parker in the final scene of “In Too Deep” that Army CID isn’t the one getting dissolved, they are.

NCIS Is Ruining Gibbs To Save Its Trailblazing Show

CBS’s Super Tuesday return in 2026 makes it clear that NCIS is prioritizing its trailblazing spinoff than preserving a specific part of Gibbs’ legacy.

This marks the end of NCIS as an agency since it was first properly established in 1992. As seen in NCIS: Origins — the franchise’s prequel tackling Gibbs’ start with the organization, the earlier version of the agency was called NIS until the re-organization that led to the rename to NCIS. The period show has yet to cross this moment in the timeline, but it was mentioned during Young Ducky’s appearance earlier in its sophomore year. Considering the timeline, it’s curious if the timing of this story in the flagship has anything to do with the upcoming change of name for the bureau.

Why Vance’s agency was chosen to be dissolved, especially after years of doing solid and high-profile work, is currently uncertain. NCIS season 23, episode 12 ends before he could share any more details or Parker could form a reaction to the jaw-dropping announcement. Beyond them, no one else knows what’s going on with the organization.

What NCIS’s Shutting Down Means For Vance, Parker, & The Rest

“In Too Deep” is the penultimate story to NCIS‘s milestone 500th episode. As with previous landmark outings from the series, the upcoming story will be extra special, but after Vance’s news, it will also be more intriguing. Per the official logline from CBS, “All Good Things” will see the team help the son of a marine that Gibbs assisted during his time with MCRT. That said, the fact that NCIS is dissolved poses extra challenge for the team to do their job.

Since NCIS is already renewed for season 24, it’s safe to say that one way or another, the agency will eventually be reinstated. Whether it will look the same as it was before this happened is the bigger question at this point. The writers can’t simply pull a vital twist like this without any plans to change the show’s format moving forward. Otherwise, it will feel like this plot is done for nothing but shock factor. Perhaps this is a pre-cursor to the final stage of NCIS evolution following its rebrand.
