Pokémon Fans Torn Over Black And White Remake

The Pokémon franchise has been through a ton of ups and downs over the years, with everyone having their own personal favorites, as well as releases which just didn’t hit the mark. Pokémon Black and White are arguably some of the most divisive, but their collective reputations have certainly improved over the years.

Releasing all the way back in 2010, Pokémon Black and White certainly had its strengths, breaking the record for the most new ‘mons introduced to the franchise in one go, with 156. It also added other nice features like seasonal cycles and animated sprites, but it wasn’t all good news.

Many felt the games didn’t innovate enough, and that many of the designs for the ridiculous number of new Pokémon were somewhat lacking. As such, it’s perhaps surprising that so many have called for remakes to bring the Black and White formula into 2026, but they continue to grow nonetheless.

Game Freak Hasn’t Announced A Gen 5 Remake Yet

The first important thing to note is that developer Game Freak is yet to confirm that they are even working on a remake of Pokémon Black and White, despite fans calling for it from all corners. In even more disappointing news, the infamous Teraleak seemingly doesn’t contain any reference to one either.

All of that means that there likely isn’t one in development right now, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen in the future, particularly if the demands of the community continue to grow at the current rate.

Fans Have Mixed Reactions To Gen 5

Over on Reddit, one user asked fans why there have been so many recent requests for Black and White remakes, and it’s safe to say there was a very mixed response to the idea.

“The people who grew up with Gen 5 (like you) are now growing up and care more about what the series is like. Naturally, they want it to be like what they grew up with, and with the tradition of old game remakes (FRLG, HGSS, ORAS, BDSP) it would make sense for Black and White to get one soon,” one comment read.

“Overtime, people have come to appreciate BW. BW is over 15 years old at this point, which is enough time to have a remake in the latest gen,” another added.

A third wanted something a little less ambitious, saying, “I would prefer a Remaster, rather than a remake. Something like the recent Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalise Chronicles. Same game, a couple of QOL additions and add in the new mechanics (like Fairy Type). But don’t TOUCH the best sprites that Pokémon ever made!”

Whatever Game Freak does decide to do moving forward, it’s clear that there’s plenty of demand for Pokémon Black and White to return in some form. Fingers crossed they listen to the audience and get going on what would be a very exciting project soon.
