SVU Season 28 Confirmed With 1 Major Star Returning After Casting Shakeup

Olivia Benson and her team will continue to solve heinous crime next cycle, as Law & Order: SVU is coming back for season 28.

Being on the air for almost 30 years is no small feat, especially at a point when the entertainment industry is rapidly changing. Aside from stiff competition from fellow traditional broadcast offerings, streaming’s rise in popularity has also made it trickier to launch a successful show, let alone sustain it for years. So having something like Law & Order: SVU — the longest-running active show on TV still going strong during the 2025-2026 run is very impressive.

As the procedural enters its final stretch, looking back at Law & Order: SVU season 27 and it’s easy to see that Benson and his team have overcome a lot just this year. After the death of Captain Cragen, the Manhattan squad also lost both Kat Silva and Joe Velasco, although they got Amanda Rollins back and welcomed Jake Griffin. Throughout its run, however, Law & Order: SVU season 27 has missed a lot of episodes with Fin Tutuola.

Luckily, Ice-T took it to his official X account to announce that not only is he back on the set of the show, he’s also confirmed to return for Law & Order: SVU season 28. Currently, NBC and Wolf Entertainment have yet to make any decisions about the show past this season. However, it’s possible that they are only waiting for the right time to let the public know. It just so happened that Ice-T beat them to it. Check out his social media post below:

For what it’s worth, it was difficult to imagine NBC pulling the plug on Law & Order: SVU at this point. Aside from the legacy it carries, being on the air for almost three decades, it continues to have good viewership for the network. Granted that it isn’t topping any charts, but a consistent showing week after week is equally important, especially for a series that has been on the air for as long as it has been.

There was a previous report that NBC was looking to renew it for season 28, but it would come with some trade-offs, including another round of cost-cutting. Wolf Entertainment shows, including the Law & Order duo and the One Chicago franchise have been dealing with the situation for years, which manifests with fewer episode appearances for longer-term cast members. That’s actually one of the reasons why Fin missed a lot of outings in Law & Order: SVU season 27.

Ultimately, however, the chances of Law & Order: SVU writing out Fin are so little to none. Mariska Hargitay’s Benson is the face of the series, but he is as important to the show, being its longest supporting character. Ice-T has also been vocal about staying in the show for as long as her co-star will be in it. At this point, NBC and Wolf Entertainment’s goal should be to have the series cross the 30th season milestone.
