A Disney science-fiction movie that disappointed at the box office is coming to Netflix next week.
Disney has had numerous animated science-fiction hits, including Lilo & Stitch, WALL-E, and Big Hero 6, but except for IP like Star Wars, the studio has largely struggled in this genre when it comes to live action. John Carter, Tomorrowland, and A Wrinkle in Time are among those that had a difficult time both critically and commercially.
Now, Disney’s science-fiction movie The Creator, which was made via 20th Century Studios, is coming to Netflix in the United States on March 20. The film is set in a future world that is consumed by a war between humans and artificial intelligence. This conflict becomes more complicated when Sergeant Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) discovers Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), an AI child with unprecedented powers who he chooses to protect rather than destroy. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards, whose other credits include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World Rebirth, and the 2014 Godzilla.
After grossing $104.3 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, The Creator was considered a box office disappointment. With a $63.5 million international gross and $40.8 million domestic gross, the movie performed better overseas than it did in the U.S. Compared to the global totals of Rogue One at more than $1 billion, Jurassic World Rebirth at $869 million, and Godzilla at $529 million, The Creator did not live up to the financial heights of Gareth Edwards’ other films, even with their significantly higher budgets.
Per the 67% critics’ score and 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Creator‘s reception was largely positive, though. In ScreenRant‘s The Creator review, Graeme Guttmann gives the movie seven out of 10 stars and praises it for not shying away from how “The brutality of the US military is on full display here” and that “it’s a more exhilarating experience to watch a movie of this scale take risks and fall short than it is to see a blockbuster play it safe and deliver mediocre results.” Many other reviews celebrate the cinematic visuals and world building, but criticize what the story ultimately has to say about AI.
In the time since The Creator was released in theaters on September 29, 2023, discourse around artificial intelligence has only become more prevalent and divisive, especially after the controversy over AI “actor” Tilly Norwood. Whether the movie’s take on AI has aged well or not in the last few years is something U.S. viewers can decide for themselves after it comes to Netflix on March 20. This is also an opportunity for The Creator to perform better with U.S. audiences than it did at the box office in 2023.
