Julian Brandt to leave Borussia Dortmund as free agent

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken has confirmed that Julian Brandt will leave the club at the end of the 2025/26 season, closing out a seven‑year tenure at Signal Iduna Park. Ricken explained after Dortmund’s 2-1 win over FC Koln that “after open talks, we agreed that the contract that is set to expire would not be renewed.”

Brandt, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019, made 298 competitive appearances for the club, scoring 56 goals and providing 68 assists during his time in black and yellow. His creativity remained evident in his final months, including an assist in the recent victory over FC Koln.

Several clubs are expected to pursue the soon‑to‑be free agent, with reported interest emerging from Aston Villa, as well as teams in Serie A and La Liga monitoring his situation.

Ricken emphasized mutual respect in the decision and framed the departure as an opportunity for Dortmund to “move in a slightly new direction” as they reshape their midfield. As Brandt prepares for the next chapter of his career, Dortmund begin planning for life without one of their most productive attacking midfielders of recent years.
