Star Wars boss Kathleen Kennedy has revealed key information about Grogu’s future.
Kennedy confirmed that the upcoming movie The Mandalorian and Grogu won’t see the titular child develop one particular Yoda power. Set after the events of The Mandalorian season 3, The Mandalorian and Grogu sees the title characters embark upon a new adventure, becoming involved in the New Republic’s war against the remnants of the Empire.
Speaking with Variety during the Golden Reel Awards in Los Angeles, Kennedy revealed that Grogu will not speak in The Mandalorian and Grogu. The Star Wars boss and producer explained how important Grogu’s lack of speech is to his character, allowing his emotions to be displayed without words. There are currently no plans for him to start speaking:
[Grogu is] another perfect example of a character that has to emote and you have to feel connected to, and he never speaks a word.
[H]e never says a word.
Kennedy, who won an honorary award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors, confirmed the lack of plans for Grogu to gain the power of speech at any point in the new movie. This means the story of The Mandalorian and Grogu will be just like the pair’s previous adventures, making the film familiar to the Disney+ show from which it originates.
It also confirms a major, key difference between Grogu and Yoda that will likely remain for quite some time. In previous Star Wars movies, Yoda was known for his quotes, which were often English sentences with the placement of words switched around. It’s an iconic element of his character, and a pattern of speech that hasn’t been emulated elsewhere in the franchise.
However, if it ever does come back, it seems like Grogu won’t be the one to deliver it. By not having Grogu speak, it preserves a core element of his character. As Kennedy states, the biggest strength he has is how he wears his emotions on his sleeve, making it easy to tell how he feels through facial expressions alone.
This keeping with the form of the show spells good tidings for The Mandalorian and Grogu. The previous adventures of the pair in The Mandalorian season 3 garnered controversy because of the series beginning to step away from focusing on the duo, instead trying to become a vehicle of expansion for Star Wars lore.
However, while there are going to be some familiar faces in the upcoming movie, such as an adult Rotta the Hutt voiced by Jeremy Allen White, the focus appears to be back on the core duo. This is evident in what Kennedy states about the movie, symbolizing that it will have a familiar feel when compared to the original series.
The movie’s arrival also comes within major changes at Lucasfilm. While Kennedy was involved with greenlighting the movie, she is no longer president of the company. That honor now goes to co-leaders Dave Filoni, who co-wrote the movie, and Lynwen Brennan, the company’s former executive vice president.
With Grogu not speaking, The Mandalorian and Grogu promises to keep him different from Yoda while maintaining aspects to his character that make him unique. This will likely be furthered in the film, indicative of how his development won’t be hindered or hinge upon his need to speak.
The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters on May 22, 2026.
