Horror movies have some of the best quotes from any genre, but the most repeated quotes aren’t the only ones that remain iconic, as some lesser-quoted lines are just as brilliant. Hearing people say, “Here’s Johnny” from The Shining or quoting Hannibal Lecter’s line about fava beans and Chianti is easy.
However, those movies also have lesser-quoted lines that also remain iconic and play into the stories. There are also horror movies all the way back to Hollywood’s Golden Age that have incredible lines that deserve respect. From Dracula to modern movies like Sinners and The Witch, these horror movie quotes remain among the best.
“I Never Drink … Wine” – Dracula
When looking at the original 1931 Dracula movie, there are several quotes that people love to repeat, with “Children of the Night” among the best. However, this classic Universal horror movie is full of great quotes. These are almost all by Dracula himself, although Van Helsing also has some great lines.
What might be one of the best Dracula quotes in the entire movie is one that remains underrated. Bela Lugosi’s Count Dracula is having dinner with Renfield early in the movie, and the man offers the Count a drink. However, Dracula delivers an ominous line, “I never drink … wine.”
While it might seem innocent enough, the pause between “drink” and “wine” was telling, and obviously hinted at his tendency to drink blood from his victims. Lugosi’s delivery was masterful, but outside of horror fandoms, it remains a lesser-known, yet iconic horror quote.
“To A New World Of Gods And Monsters” – Bride Of Frankenstein
While people love to quote “He’s Alive” when looking at the Frankenstein movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood, there is an even better quote few people mention. This horror quote wasn’t spoken by Dr. Frankenstein, but by Bride of Frankenstein’s real villain, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger).
It was Dr. Pretorius who helped create the Bride for Frankenstein’s Monster, and he was an evil man. However, his quote, “To a new world of gods and monsters,” showed how he viewed himself, placing his own status as a scientist above even God himself and ensuring his doom.
However, this is a quote that is famous among people who love Bride of Frankenstein, and for horror scholars and true fans. This was a quote that was used as a movie title for the James Whale biopic, with Gods and Monsters telling the story of the Frankenstein filmmaker.
“A Boy’s Best Friend Is His Mother” – Psycho
The best Psycho movie quotes usually end up leading to people delivering the most famous, from “We all go a little mad sometimes” to “Why, she shouldn’t even harm a fly.” However, the best quote comes from Norman Bates and shows his intense connection to his mother.
Of course, Norman Bates is the killer in this movie, but he also has delusions that his mother is still alive, and he even takes on her appearance when killing, without knowing that he is the killer. This is hinted at when Norman is talking to Marion before killing her as the first victim in the movie.
This line, “A boy’s best friend is his mother,” shows that Norman has always put his mother above all others, including the women that he might have loved. He also had a later quote, “A son is a poor substitute for a lover,” which shows even more that he never escaped her grasp, even after her death.
“He Has His Father’s Eyes” – Rosemary’s Baby
Rosemary’s Baby is a masterpiece of horror, created during the rise of the Satanic scares of the 1960s, and shows a woman impregnated by Satan to carry the Antichrist. Most of the movie is a slow-burning tale of terror as Rosemary struggles to understand what is real and what is in her mind.
However, it all turned out to be true, as the people living in her building are part of a Satanic cult, and the baby Rosemary delivered was, in fact, the Antichrist. The ending showed her considering killing the child, before finally giving up and agreeing to hold the demonic baby.
The most terrifying moment came when she looked into the crib and saw the baby, and asked what was wrong with the baby’s eyes. That is when the brilliant quote, “He has his father’s eyes,” occurred, referring to Satan.
“Trust Is A Tough Thing To Come By These Days” – The Thing
John Carpenter’s The Thing ended with a question about whether MacReady (Kurt Russell) or Childs (Keith David) is the alien in disguise. The entire movie is an allegory of Cold War paranoia, with people fearing their neighbors were communists. In The Thing, it was also the paranoia of betrayal.
By the end, everyone was dead, but MacReady and Childs, and Carpenter left viewers to decide which of them, if either, was the alien now. That made a quote from earlier in the movie ring true. This came when MacReady was talking to others about the problems of trusting each other.
Someone told MacReady to trust them, but he responded, “Trust is a tough thing to come by these days.” It was the perfect quote, and one that showed how tired the survivors were at that point. They knew everyone was going to die, and this quote showed why.
“Your Suffering Will Be Legendary, Even In Hell.” – Hellbound: Hellraiser II
The Hellraiser series started out incredibly, with a first movie that redesigned the idea of body horror and S&M torture. The second movie was a rare horror sequel that also offered a quality, terrifying look at the beauty of horror and pain. These two Hellraiser movies are still the best of the best, but the best quote came in the sequel.
This quote was delivered by Pinhead himself, and he delivered this line to Kirsty, who had called back the Cenobites to help her get revenge against the psychiatrist who wanted to open a portal to Hell himself. Pinhead agreed to help, but he gave Kirsty a beautiful warning.
He said that if she tried to trick them again, her “suffering will be legendary even in Hell.” This was a masterful line that showed that Pinhead knows who is in charge, and no one is more terrifying.
“You’ve Got Red On You” – Shaun Of The Dead
The book about the making of Shaun of the Dead is titled You’ve Got Red on You. This movie has a lot of great quotes, but the fact that the quote that was used in the book about the film reveals what the zombie flick was all about.
Shaun and Ed would spend the entire movie trying to save their friends and family while avoiding zombies. Throughout the movie, this one quote was used more than once. It started with a rude co-worker at the start when Shaun’s red pen began leaking in his white shirt pocket.
However, it took on a different meaning by the end. Instead of a rude quote, the end saw Shaun with red blood all over his shirt from fighting off the zombies, so the red takes on a more literal meaning.
“Wouldst Thou Like To Live Deliciously?” – The Witch
The best line in Robert Eggers’ The Witch is a line that isn’t a good one to repeat when talking to horror movie fans, but it is one that true horror aficionados would instantly recognize thanks to its eloquence. The line is one spoken by the demonic goat, Black Phillip, after Thomasin killed her mother in self-defense.
The line is, “Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?” This has a huge meaning, as Thomasin was dismissed all the while as a witch, and even her family dismissed her and held her down. She never had a chance to experience freedom or happiness in her entire life. Black Phillip offered this to her.
Black Phillip offered her good food and clothes. This seems a little lackluster when looked at on its own, but when seeing what it means for someone like Thomasin to finally find her happiness.
“Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Eyes To See” – Event Horizon
The most terrifying quote in Event Horizon was both about the way it was delivered and the visuals of Sam Neill when delivering the quote. This movie, similar to Alien, sees a crew sent to investigate an abandoned space vessel. However, this one disappeared years before and returned suddenly,
While Alien saw the crew overrun with aliens, the crew of Event Horizon discovered something even more terrifying. This ship came back from a demonic plane of existence and wanted to bring evil back with it. When the crew found the ship, Sam Neill’s Billy Weir was one of the first victims.
However, he returned mutilated, with his eyes destroyed. This line was terrifying, with him explaining they don’t need eyes where they are going, which might be a one-way trip to Hell.
“You Keep Dancing With The Devil, One Day He’s Gonna Follow You Home” – Sinners
Sinners is one of the most acclaimed horror movies in recent years, and the reasons are because of its acting, direction, music, and impeccable script. The story sees twin brothers, Smoke and Stacks, return to their home in the Jim Crow South and attempt to open a juke joint. They experience violence and the KKK.
There are plenty of great quotes in the movie, but one of the best was spoken by Sammie’s dad and the twins’ uncle, Rev. Moore (Saul Williams). He tells Sammi that if he keeps “dancing with the devil” by sinning, the devil will follow him home. When the vampires showed up, it proved him right.
Sinners had a lot going for it, and it was a modern-day horror masterpiece. This iconic horror movie quote was just one of several reasons why.
