The balance of power in the NFL’s AFC division shifted on Wednesday as the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to send All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a significant draft package.

The Chiefs will receive the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft, along with 2026 fifth- and sixth-round selections and a 2027 third-round pick.

For Los Angeles, the move represents an aggressive answer to a clear roster deficiency. Cornerback was among the Rams’ most pressing needs entering the offseason, with four players at the position set to hit free agency.

Over the past three seasons, McDuffie emerged as arguably Kansas City’s most complete defensive back, lining up both in the slot and on the perimeter while contributing as a blitzer.

In 2024, he delivered a career-best campaign with two interceptions and 13 pass breakups, along with 59 tackles and four quarterback hits.

His postseason resume is equally notable, producing 13 pass breakups and multiple takeaways across 10 playoff appearances during the Chiefs’ recent championship runs.

Kansas City’s decision echoes its 2024 move to trade cornerback L’Jarius Sneed rather than meet top-of-market contract demands.

Sneed subsequently signed a lucrative long-term deal with Tennessee. Several members of the 2022 draft class are also due to become unrestricted free agents next week, increasing financial pressure on the roster.
