Nintendo Celebrating Mario Day With 3 Free Games For You To Grab

Mario Day is just around the corner, and over the years has become an exciting annual event that gives fans a chance to celebrate the iconic and beloved character. This year, Nintendo is kicking off Mario Day with a nice little surprise giveaway.

Starting next week on March 10, the official date for Mario Day, Nintendo is giving away three unique titles that Nintendo Switch users can claim for free. The announcement includes some highly underrated classics, and will give Mario fans something new and exciting to play to celebrate the occasion (via GR).

If you love Mario (and who doesn’t?), there’s plenty of content available for Nintendo Switch users to celebrate Mario Day next week. However, if you’re looking to expand your collection and dive into a few new titles, Nintendo just announced three free games that will be available to Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers starting March 10.

Switch Online members will be able to download Mario vs. Donkey Kong on the Game Boy Advance app, as well as Mario’s Tennis and Mario Clash for the new Virtual Boy app that launched a few weeks ago. The new Virtual Boy app has been a hit so far, bringing a handful of great VB classics to the Switch, such as 3-D Tetris and Galactic Pinball, and continues to grow with these two new Mario releases.

The free games will only be available to Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, which is the higher-tier option of the two, costing players roughly $50/month. However, members at the Expansion Pack tier do get much more bang for their buck, with access to a massive library of Nintendo Classics for N64, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and now Virtual Boy as well.

These May Not Be The Games You Expected

While Switch Online members with the Expansion Pack option will be able to play these three games for free, the titles themselves aren’t necessarily the most talked-about Mario games out there. That said, they’re worth checking out if you’re a fan of classic Mario experiences.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a 2004 puzzle-platformer for the Game Boy Advance that comes highly recommended among fans. However, the Virtual Boy classics, Mario’s Tennis and Mario Clash, are both more niche games in the Mario collection and aren’t as highly lauded among players.

Mario’s Tennis, not to be confused with Mario Tennis for the N64 or Mario Tennis Fever for Switch 2, is a 1995 release that lets you play as one of seven different beloved characters. Mario Clash, on the other hand, is a 3D reimagining of the original Mario Bros game, and was received somewhat poorly upon launch back in 1995. Both titles are worth checking out if you’re a hardcore Mario fan looking for a new challenge on Mario Day this year.
