Gnabry sees parallels between 2025-26 Bayern team and 2020 treble winners

Serge Gnabry believes Bayern Munich can do the treble this season after seeing parallels between the current team and the 2020 squad.

Bayern won the treble under the guidance of Hansi Flick in the 2019-20 season, ending the campaign with the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal titles.

Gnabry was particularly impressive during that season, directly contributing to 36 goals (23 goals, 13 assists) in 46 appearances for Bayern.

Nine of those goals came in 10 Champions League appearances, along with two assists, with the Bavarian giants triumphing in the COVID-hit season.

Bayern are 11 points clear at the Bundesliga summit, while they are in the last 16 of the Champions League and semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal.

In an interview with the club magazine, 51, Gnabry explained his reason for the comparison between the two Bayern teams.

“I see parallels to the treble-winning team of 2020 – even if it is still early for big statements,” said Gnabry.

“But for me, the atmosphere in the team is currently the best since then. Victories always help, the belief in something bigger arises almost automatically.”

Robert Lewandowski was Bayern’s main man in 2019-20, scoring 55 goals in 47 appearances, while Harry Kane has taken on that role this term.

The England captain has scored 45 goals in 37 matches for Vincent Kompany’s side, with 30 of those in the Bundesliga. Lewandowski holds the record for goals in a single season in Germany’s top flight (41).

Kane, though, is not getting ahead of himself in Bayern’s title charge.

“The more I play with them, the better I understand my team-mates,” added Kane.

“The players understand each other and the processes better, feel more comfortable in their positions and movements.

“We had an 11-point lead a few weeks ago and we saw how quickly it can change within two results.”
