Real shocked in huge result at top of La Liga

Real Madrid fell to a shocking 1-0 defeat at home by Getafe to leave them four points behind Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s side dominated the match throughout but lacked a killer touch in front of goal without the injured Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.

Getafe had not won at the Bernabeu since 2008 but took the points through a moment of class from Martin Satriano.

The loose ball was not cleared and Satriano scored a stunning volley from the edge of the penalty area, smashing the ball past Thibaut Courtois.

Tempers frayed in the last minute as substitute Franco Mastantuono was shown a red card for dissent – the sixth player to be sent off for Real in the league this season.

And there was still time for Getafe to go down to 10 too – Adrian Liso picking up a second booking.

Real Madrid had won their last 16 home games against Getafe in La Liga, with Getafe losing 18 of the previous 20 meetings at the Bernabeu.

Getafe manager José Bordalás had lost 14 of his 16 La Liga matches against Real but is celebrating a famous win that lifts them to 11th in the table.

His side produced a resolute defensive display, as David Soria produced an assured performance in goal to deny Real on a damaging night.

Vinicius Jr led the line in place of Mbappe and wasted the clearest chance of the first half, going through on goal only to be denied by Soria.

Arbeloa turned to his bench almost immediately after the restart, making three changes inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half – including withdrawing Trent Alexander-Arnold – and the home side did improve, with crosses into the box causing Getafe increasing problems. Antonio Rüdiger glanced a near-post header wide, substitute Rodrygo nodded across goal and Dani Carvajal was unable to convert at the far post.

The evening turned uglier in stoppage time when Mastantuono was dismissed for abusive language towards referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz, though Getafe also finished with 10 men after Liso picked up a second yellow card for time-wasting.

The defeat is Arbeloa’s fourth in 12 games in charge.
