We may still be waiting for any official word on Red Dead Redemption 3, but that doesn’t mean there are no games for fans of westerns to be excited about. A new co-op shooter, Far Far West, has just moseyed into town, offering some fresh Wild West action. And better still, you can try the game free right now.
Red Dead Redemption 2: Unleashed Feels Like An Entirely New Game
Red Dead Redemption 2: Unleashed lets blossoming cowboys roam the West as lawmen, rather than outlaw criminals.
Dropping just a few days before Steam Next Fest, the demo for Far Far West is now available, offering a chance to test out its fast-paced PvE gameplay. The game plays similarly to the 2024 breakout hit, Helldivers 2, pitting up to four players against waves of enemies as they try to accomplish specific tasks. The demo, available through Far Far West’s Steam page, has already garnered its fair share of positive reviews.
Far Far West Is A Western Co-Op Shooter
1–4 Players Face Off Against Armies Of Undead
Far Far West puts you in the role of a robot cowboy bounty hunter, a descriptor that my inner child can’t help but find unabashedly cool. You and up to three partners (cowboy pun intended) will carry out jobs for the Sheriff, like restoring power to factories or taking out specific enemies. A variety of supernatural, and often skeletal, enemies will try their best to kill you before you can finish the job.
While the game’s formula is familiar to anyone who has played Helldivers 2, its fresh aesthetic does a lot of heavy lifting. It’s cartoon style and fun elements, like the flying train you drop in from, add a lot of personality. You’ll also be treated to some unique boss fights, like a floating ghost saloon. Between this game and the FF7 Remake, buildings are slowly becoming an unexpectedly fun type of enemy to fight.

Fun Westerns Are Hard To Come By
Aside from the tactics game Desperados III back in 2020, it’s hard to think of a major Western game since Red Dead Redemption 2‘s initial 2018 release. While Far Far West‘s style and gameplay is a far cry from the photorealistic and narratively rich Rockstar hit, it does scratch the itch of being a badass gunslinger. If anything, the game’s unique identity makes it all the more enjoyable as it doesn’t evoke strict one-to-one comparisons with RDR2.
Six Years After RDR2’s Success, Red Dead Redemption 3 Will Have No Real Competition
Despite the massive success of Red Dead Redemption 2, the Western genre hasn’t seen much of a revival in the gaming world in recent years.
Of course, even if you haven’t invested hundreds of hours in the story of Arthur Morgan, there is a lot to love about Far Far West. While it may lack the impressive visuals and deep world-building of Helldivers 2, Far Far West‘s small file size and less restrictive system requirements make it an accessible option for more players. For a cooperative game, I often prefer accessibility to flare, as I’d prefer to play it with all my friends, not just those with high-end PCs.
Although Far Far West may not be a full substitute for the much anticipated RDR3, it is a fun alternative for Western fans looking to try something new while they wait. While there is no single rich and engaging story built into the game, the fun stories you’ll create with your friends while playing will make up for it. And honestly, who hasn’t dreamt of being a robot cowboy bounty hunter?
