My Heat 2 Predictions For Which Characters Christian Bale & Leonardo DiCaprio Are Actually Playing

Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio are confirmed to star in Heat 2, but who are they playing? I once stated Heat 2 had an impossible recasting challenge, as finding actors to inherit roles previously held by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino is no mean feat.

Of course, any new Michael Mann movie tends to attract the very best actors in the business. The upcoming Heat 2 is based upon Mann and Meg Gardiner’s novel of the same name, which acts as prequel and sequel. While numerous rumors are swirling around the movie’s casting, only Bale and DiCaprio are confirmed thus far.

Heat 2 features a large cast of characters and covers over a decade of time. There’s little doubt the sequel will be a star-studded affair, but the key characters it needs to cast are Hanna, Neil, and Shiherlis, previously played by Pacino, De Niro and Val Kilmer respectively. If the sequel has a defacto main character, it would arguably be Shiherlis.

Heat 2 details his early years with Neil and the crew, and then how his life is altered following the original film. It’s a juicy antihero role, and the type of character DiCaprio is attracted to. There are many layers to Shiherlis, and he’s the one who evolves the most as the story unfolds; he even gets a romantic subplot.

While Austin Butler was previously rumored, DiCaprio feels like the right fit for it. Speaking on the project with Variety in 2025, Leo himself didn’t seem sure if he was going to play Shiherlis or Hanna. This could be because he hadn’t made up his mind, or he was playing coy. Either way, I’m picturing Bale as Hanna instead.

He previously played a lawman for Michael Mann in Public Enemies, and he has plenty of experience with antiheroes like Hanna, too. It might be hard for the sequel to live up to Pacino vs De Niro, but Bale vs DiCaprio wouldn’t look too shabby on the poster.

Bale inheriting the part would be exciting for many reasons, but most of all because he wouldn’t just do a Pacino impression. He’d bring a fresh take to the part, and while Heat 2 might be a sequel, the new cast still needs to put their own stamp on these characters.

Adam Driver Is Almost Certain To Play Heat 2’s Young Neil

Mann’s previous movie, Ferrari was, aptly enough, fronted by Adam Driver. Since 2023, Driver has been the actor most linked to Heat 2, with the star being rumored for the Neil McCauley role. While Neil is only in the 1988 section of the novel, he looms large over the entire narrative.

The novel also explains exactly why Neil is so emotionally shut off in the film. Driver is perfect casting, and is said to have passed on Nancy Meyers’ next rom-com to keep his schedule open for Heat 2. So, if I’m correct, the sequel will feature DiCaprio as Shiherlis, Bale as Hanna and Driver as Neil.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. Maybe Leo will play Hanna after all, while Bale could be Heat 2’s monstrous villain, Wardell. Time will tell, but if I were a gambler (I’m not, BTW), those would be my best guesses.
