Xbox Game Pass is among the most popular subscription gaming services on the market, and while not every game added to the service are top-tier hits, members are spoiled for choice when it comes to free titles. In case you missed it, there was even a recent rollout of free classic titles listed on Game Pass that were added out of nowhere.

Xbox Game Pass users were just treated to five new classic retro games on the service, which were apparently shadow dropped out of nowhere and are completely free to members at all subscription tiers (via TrueAchievements).

Xbox Game Pass users can officially download and play five new classic games that were recently added to the service without any major announcement or fanfare. They include titles from the MS DOS and Atari 2600 days, and old-school gamers who have an appreciation for retro experiences will definitely want to check these out.

The five new titles include the following:

• Beyond Zork: The Coconut of Quendor — MS DOS (1987)
• Kabobber — Atari 2600 (1983)
• Return to Zork — MS DOS (1993)
• Seaquest — Atari 2600 (1983)
• Stampede — Atari 2600 (1981)

All five titles are completely free to play for subscribers at all tiers of Xbox Game Pass—Ultimate, Premium, or Essential—and it’s likely you didn’t hear about them considering Xbox didn’t mention these in any recent announcements.

Retro Gamers Should Be Happy With This Drop

It isn’t every day that you get to play old-school text adventure games like Beyond Zork, which is considered one of the earliest and best attempts to merge RPG mechanics into the genre and paved the way for countless narrative-driven games to come in terms of world-building strictly through storytelling.

Further, Atari fans will likely remember some of these new Xbox Game Pass titles like Seaquest, and more esoteric titles like Kabobber have a strange history that will send players down a bit of rabbit hole (via Atari Protos). Stampede is also a memorable title for Atari fans in that it was an extremely difficult game on the Atari 2600, though it’s unclear if the Game Pass version poses an equal challenge.

All in all, there’s no question that this set of classic releases on Xbox Game Pass will keep retro gamers busy for a while, and they’re even worth checking out if you’ve never touched an Atari or MS DOS game in your life. These five entries are a nice little trip into video game past that can also give players some perspective on how far the industry has come.
