Margot Robbie’s Best On-Screen Chemistry: Focus with Will Smith

Margot Robbie has made her way to the top of Hollywood’s A-list, and it seems like she’s worked with everyone in the industry. However, there are some notable on-screen relationships from her career.

Most recently, her film Wuthering Heights premiered in theaters on Valentine’s Day weekend. She played Catherine and starred alongside Jacob Elordi, who portrayed Heathcliff.

While Robbie and Elordi have an intense on-screen and off-screen chemistry, fans shouldn’t forget about her connection with another well-known actor.

Robbie starred in the 2015 film Focus with Will Smith. Smith plays Nicky, a con artist who decides to teach Jess, played by Robbie, everything he knows.

Throughout Jess’s education in the world of scamming, the pair start a romantic relationship, but Nicky decides she’s getting too close, and he calls off the relationship. They meet again three years later. Jess’s presence startles Nicky and almost ruins his ultimate con.

The film was a box office success and made over $150 million. Nine years later, the film was released on Netflix, and it ranked fifth on Netflix’s Global Top 10 films for the week of November 11, 2024, with 5.4 million views.

A lot of the film’s success is derived from the chemistry between Robbie and Smith’s characters. Their on-screen romance is wrapped up in the moral of the film — that love is worth more than money.

If Robbie fans are looking for a romance, they should consider Focus, as it’s not shrouded in as much controversy as Wuthering Heights.

Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of the Emily Brontë novel has come under harsh criticism by viewers. Fennell fundamentally changed the story by removing Catherine’s older brother Hindley from the narrative.

She also influenced the film’s themes of discrimination and jealousy by making Catherine the person who named Heathcliff instead of Earnshaw, played by Martin Clunes.

This plays into the controversy surrounding Elordi’s casting as Heathcliff. Many believe the character should have been played by a person of color due to the characterization of Heathcliff in the book — he was described as “a dark-skinned gipsy.

Some could argue that Heathcliff’s race was never confirmed in the book, but he is certainly othered and treated differently by the rest of the characters.

Elordi responded to the criticism and said, “This is Emerald’s interpretation of the text, and Emerald is an artist that I respect and admire, and I think her work is really important.

He added that his goal as an actor was always to “serve the truth of the screenplay that I’ve been handed.

Focus is still available to be streamed on Netflix.
