Hosts put one foot in Champions League last 16

Borussia Dortmund put one foot in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the first leg of their knockout play-off tie.

After a 15-minute delay to kick-off due to Dortmund’s late arrival, it was the hosts who turned up first on the pitch when Serhou Guirassy headed the opener in the third minute after a great cross from Julian Ryerson.

Guirassy turned provider just before the break as the striker teed up Maximilian Beier to tap home and put Dortmund well on their way to to the last 16.

The Bundesliga outfit failed to add to their lead but will head for the second leg in Bergamo next week with a big advantage – though they will know the tie is far from over.
